Shifting homes in Surat
Surat is a city of flats. Apart from the old quarters around Gopipura and Nanpura, most people live in apartment buildings, from the four and five storey blocks of Varachha and Katargam to the newer towers of Vesu, Pal and the Dumas Road side. The Tapi curls through the city, with Adajan, Rander and Pal on one side and the old city, Athwa and the textile markets on the other, joined by a string of bridges.
Diamonds and textiles run the city. The polishing units of Varachha, Katargam and Kapodra employ families who came from Saurashtra, and the looms and processing houses of Udhna, Pandesara and Sachin draw workers from Odisha, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Hazira adds engineers and plant staff at L&T, AM/NS and the port and gas terminals, and the diamond bourse at Khajod has brought offices to the south of the city.
For a move, that means small lifts and many flights of stairs in the older belts, and service lifts with society rules in the new towers. It also means a calendar of its own. The diamond units close for a long Diwali break and many workers go home to Saurashtra, while the textile markets are at their busiest in the weeks before it. Damp air through most of the year decides how wood and upholstery are wrapped.

Distances inside Surat are short. Vesu to Adajan is about 10 km and Varachha to Pal about 15, and most local moves are one day's work for a 2 BHK. What stretches the day is the crossing: the bridges over the Tapi and the flyovers on Ring Road crawl at office hours, and the roads near the markets at Salabatpura clog by late morning. Society and building rules
Most Surat apartment buildings are run by an elected committee, and the secretary expects to hear the date and hour of the move. The newer towers in Vesu, Pal and on Dumas Road book the service lift, fix shifting hours and sometimes take a refundable deposit, and a few will not let furniture out until the maintenance is cleared. If you rent, carry the owner's consent in writing. In the older blocks the lift may not take a fridge or a wardrobe, so those go down by the stairs.

Where the truck can stand
Most newer societies have a gate wide enough for a 14 or 17 ft truck and space inside to load. In Varachha and Katargam the lanes are narrow and lined with parked two-wheelers, so the truck stays on the road and we carry. The old city lanes around Gopipura and Nanpura take only a tempo or a handcart. Ring Road past the textile markets has no room to stand during trading hours, so a move near the markets is done early or late.

Traffic and timing
Large goods vehicles are barred from Surat's main roads through much of the daylight, which means the big truck is booked for the window it is allowed and a smaller one handles daytime work. Traffic is heaviest on Ring Road near the textile markets, at Udhna Darwaja and on the Tapi bridges in the evening. Around Diwali the diamond units empty for weeks and Varachha goes quiet. On the last day of Ganesh Chaturthi the processions to the immersion points close roads across the city.

Weather and the months to plan around
Surat is humid for most of the year and gets heavy rain from late June to September. Low areas waterlog after a strong spell, and the city remembers 2006, when water released from the Ukai dam upstream sent the Tapi through large parts of it. Summers are hot, around 38 to 40°C, though the sea breeze keeps them milder than inland Gujarat. Wood and upholstery get a moisture barrier in the monsoon, and the cool, dry stretch from November to February is kindest to both goods and crew.

Our flat in Varachha has a lift too small for the fridge. How do you move it?
Down the stairs, strapped and carried by enough hands to do it safely, which we plan for at the survey. Wardrobes and beds are taken apart first so they fit the stairwell, and the whole job starts early, before the street below fills with two-wheelers and the truck loses its place.
We live near the textile markets on Ring Road. When should we move?
Early in the morning, before the markets open and the delivery tempos arrive, or on the markets' weekly closing day if yours has one. During trading hours there is nowhere for a truck to stand on Ring Road, and a move that starts at 10 am can lose half the day waiting.
Can we move in Surat during the monsoon?
Yes, with a flexible date. We watch the forecast and any warnings about the Ukai dam, and if a heavy spell is due we move the date by a day. Everything is wrapped with a plastic layer under the outer packing, and the truck is loaded under cover where the building has it.
My family is moving back to Bhavnagar. Can you take the household there?
Yes. It is about 360 km by road, normally packed and loaded one morning and unloaded the following day. A car or bike travels on a separate carrier and reaches you on its own schedule. Some families cross on the Hazira to Ghogha ferry themselves while the household goes by road, which is fine as long as someone is at the Bhavnagar end for the unloading.
