Shifting homes in Sawantwadi
Sawantwadi was the seat of the Sawant Bhonsle rulers, and the old town still turns around the palace and Moti Talav, the lake at its centre. Houses in the older wards are tiled homes of one or two storeys with a verandah, deep rooms and a store for rice and cashew. Up the lane from the palace, Chitar Ali is lined with shops selling the town's painted wooden fruit and toys, and the palace workshop still makes ganjifa cards. Newer bungalows and small apartment buildings have come up along the roads to Banda, Kudal and Amboli.
An old Sawantwadi house is heavy work. Cupboards of jackfruit wood and teak, rosewood chairs, brass lamps, big copper water pots and a loft of stored things are usual, and the door frames are low. A new bungalow is easier, with room for the truck at the gate, though the approach may be a narrow lane between laterite walls and cashew plots. The few flats in town rarely have a lift, so the stairs set the pace.
People work in the district's offices, schools and colleges, the hospital and the shops, and many cross the border each day to jobs in Pernem, Mapusa and beyond, or at the Mopa airport. Kudal's MIDC is 25 km up the highway. Families come back from Mumbai to retire in the family house, and the young leave for Mumbai, Goa and the cities over the ghats. Government officers posted to Sindhudurg arrive and leave on transfer.

Sawantwadi is a short town to cross. Moti Talav to the Kudal road side is 3 or 4 km and to Banda about 12 km, so a house usually leaves in the morning and is settled before dark. Kudal, 25 km north, and Vengurla on the coast, about 25 km west, are also same-day moves. Society and building rules
Most homes are independent houses, so the family decides the day and there is rarely a society to ask. The few apartment buildings want the secretary told and dues cleared, with daytime moves. Government and school quarters are handed back after an inspection. A house shared by brothers or cousins needs everyone agreed on what goes, preferably in writing. For a move into Goa, the new society or landlord there may have its own rules on hours, so ask before the truck is booked.

Where the truck can stand
The lake road and the main roads through town take a 14 ft truck, and the highway at the edge of town takes anything. The older wards and the market have lanes where a truck cannot turn, and houses in the villages are reached between laterite walls or across cashew plots on dirt tracks. The truck is left at the tar and the goods go the last distance by pickup or on the crew's shoulders. On the Amboli road the bends are tight and the mist closes in during the monsoon, so a smaller vehicle goes up.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Sawantwadi is light except around the market and the lake in the late morning and on the highway near Banda. Ganeshotsav brings families home from Mumbai and fills every road in the district, and the Shimga processions and village jatras through the winter close lanes for a day at a time. Weekday mornings in the dry season are the easiest. In the monsoon, loading is fitted into whatever dry hours the day gives.

Weather and the months to plan around
Sawantwadi lies at the foot of the Amboli ghat, one of the wettest places in Maharashtra. The town gets less rain than the ghat but still a great deal, from early June into October, and the air stays damp for weeks. Wood, cane, books and bedding need a moisture layer, and cartons should not stand on a wet verandah floor. The Amboli road gets mist, fallen branches and the odd landslip. April and May are humid, around 34°C, and December and January are the most comfortable months.

I work in Goa and want to move closer. Can you take us to Mapusa or Pernem?
Yes. Pernem is a short drive past Banda, and Mapusa about an hour away, so goods packed after breakfast are in the new home by the afternoon. The inventory and invoice travel in the cab for the border check. If you are renting a flat in Goa, ask the society there about its hours before we fix the date.
Our family house near Moti Talav has heavy jackfruit wood cupboards. How are they packed?
They are emptied, opened where they were built to come apart, and each part wrapped in soft padding and corrugated sheet. Anything that does not come apart has its size checked against the low doorways at the survey, and if one will not pass, we find the way out before the day. Brass and copper go in their own cartons with padding, so the weight is spread.
We are retiring from Mumbai to Sawantwadi. How should we plan the move?
Start with the Mumbai end, where the society slot and the service lift decide the loading time. At about 500 km the goods reach Sawantwadi the next day, trackable by their consignment number. The family house here may already have furniture, so decide before packing what travels, which also shrinks the load. Avoid the Ganeshotsav week, when the highway is full.
Is the Amboli ghat safe for a move to Belgaum in the monsoon?
It is open most of the time, but slow. Mist, fallen branches and the odd landslip can hold traffic for hours, so the delivery window is wider between June and September and the truck travels in daylight. Every carton and piece gets a waterproof layer inside its wrapping. From October the ghat is far easier, and Belgaum is then a comfortable same-day run.
