Karad grew up where the Koyna meets the Krishna, at the spot now called the Preeti Sangam, and the old town of peths still sits close to the rivers. Its houses are two and three storey, often with a family business on the ground floor. NH 48 runs along the edge of the town, and across it Malkapur has grown into a town of its own, with apartment buildings, row houses and the Krishna hospital campus.
For its size, the town is a big centre for education and medicine. Krishna Vishwa Vidyapeeth, with its medical college and hospital, and the Government College of Engineering bring in students, residents, nurses and teaching staff, many of whom move every year or two. Cooperative banks, sugar factories and the markets that serve the villages of the Koyna valley keep an older, settled population in the peths.
Students and hospital staff shift rented flats in Malkapur, Vidyanagar and around the colleges, usually small loads on tight dates. Families in the peths move whole houses, with heavy teak furniture, lofts and store rooms that have filled over decades. Because the two are priced and crewed so differently, we ask to see the home, by video or in person, before writing a figure down.

Society and building rules
Apartment buildings in Malkapur and Vidyanagar are run by small societies that want a note of the date and the maintenance settled, and some ask a tenant for the owner's go-ahead. Student flats are often let by an owner living nearby, so agree the handover of keys and the deposit with them before the day. College and hospital housing is vacated through the administration office, and the loading is timed to the date it fixes.

Where the truck can stand
Malkapur, Vidyanagar and the colonies built in the last twenty years give a big truck all the room it needs. The peths are tighter. Shops spill onto the street and two-wheelers line both sides, so the lorry is left on the widest road nearby and a pickup van handles the final few hundred metres. On the highway itself a truck cannot stop, so a house facing NH 48 is loaded from the service road or a side street.

Traffic and timing
NH 48 carries heavy traffic through the day, and the junction at Kolhapur Naka and the approach to the bus stand slow down most at the morning and evening peaks. The old town markets fill up from about 10 am. At the colleges, the last weeks of each semester crowd the calendar with small moves, so dates go early then. The Ganesh festival and other processions close some central streets for an evening or two.

Weather and the months to plan around
Karad's own monsoon, June to September, is steady rather than extreme, but the Koyna dam upstream sits in some of the wettest country in the state. When it releases water, both rivers rise, and low parts of the town near the Preeti Sangam have flooded in the worst years. Summers are hot and dry, around 38°C in April and May. From November to February the weather is at its easiest.

Yes. It is about 100 km through Patan and Koynanagar and down the Kumbharli ghat, a narrow, winding road that is slow for a loaded truck, more so in the monsoon. We plan it as a daytime run, use a truck size the ghat suits, and allow a full day for loading, the drive and unloading.
Can you shift a house in the old peths where the truck cannot reach?
Yes. The truck stops wherever the peth meets a main road, and a smaller vehicle runs back and forth to your door. Heavy teak furniture is dismantled in the house and wrapped before it is carried out. It adds a few hours to the day, which we build into the quote after seeing the lane on a video call.
