A flat in a new building at Kalher or Kasheli has a lift and a gate, but the road to it is shared with container trucks heading for the warehouses, and potholes in the monsoon slow everything down.

The old town to Kalher is about 10 km and Anjur Phata to Dhamankar Naka about 6 km, but a truck can spend an hour on either in the afternoon, sharing the road with containers and trailers. Many older buildings in the town have no formal society. You deal with the landlord, and it helps to warn the loom owner downstairs, whose workers and yarn share the stairs. Newer buildings at Kalher, Kasheli and Anjur Phata have committees or builder offices that want a letter, the truck number and sometimes a deposit. Staff flats inside a warehouse park are handed back to the company's admin team, and security needs the vehicle and crew details before the day.

Where the truck can stand
The old town lanes take a tempo at most, and in working hours even that struggles, so the big truck parks near Dhamankar Naka or on the bypass and the goods come out to it by tempo. On the Thane side the buildings have room at the gate, but container trucks park along the service roads, so we pick the spot for our truck in advance. Inside warehouse parks, trucks follow the route and bays that security gives them.

Traffic and timing
Bhiwandi's roads carry warehouse traffic day and night, and the jams at Anjur Phata, Mankoli, Rajnoli Naka and the Kasheli bridge can last for hours. Early morning is the best time to load, before the container traffic builds. Eid, Ganeshotsav and other festival processions close roads in the old town, and the markets there are busiest in the evening, so a move near them is kept to the first half of the day.

Weather and the months to plan around
Bhiwandi's rains, June to September, are heavy, and the low-lying old town and stretches of the highway around it flood after a hard spell. Roads break up quickly under the container traffic, and the potholes make every trip slower. Cartons and furniture need a proper wrap against the damp. Winter, from November to February, is dry and the easiest time to move. In April and May the afternoons climb towards 40°C.
