Shifting homes in Howrah
Howrah grew up around its railway station and its riverside mills, and the older half of the city still looks it. Salkia, Ghusuri and central Howrah are close-packed two and three storey houses, many shared by several branches of one family, with shops on the ground floor and a staircase barely wider than a person. Shibpur has older bungalows and walk-up flats near the Botanic Garden and IIEST, and the railway colonies at Liluah and Santragachi are rows of quarters.
The newer Howrah is along the Kona Expressway, Drainage Canal Road and the Santragachi side, where apartment towers with lifts have gone up in recent years. A move out of one of these is a lift booking and a gate pass. A move out of a Salkia house is a different job altogether, with furniture taken apart on the top floor, carried down a dark staircase and walked to wherever the truck could stop.
Work here is the railways, with big yards and workshops at Howrah, Liluah and Santragachi, the state secretariat at Nabanna in Mandirtala, and the small engineering units and foundries Howrah has had for over a century. A large part of the city speaks Hindi and has family in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, so moves back to Patna or Varanasi come up often. Packers and movers charges in Howrah
Howrah moves either stay on this side of the river or cross it. Salkia to Santragachi is about 12 km, Bally to Shibpur a little more, and a 2 BHK can do either inside a day if the truck starts early. Going to Kolkata means crossing by Vidyasagar Setu or, from Bally, by Nivedita Setu, since Howrah Bridge is a crawl at most hours. The hours go on the stair carry from old houses and on waiting out the jam around the station.

Howrah Maidan and the station area
Old buildings on the busiest roads in the city, jammed with buses and taxis for the station. Only an early morning load works here.
Bally, Belur and Liluah
Railway quarters at Liluah and old houses along GT Road. Belur Math draws big crowds on festival days, which slows the road past it.
Santragachi and the Kona Expressway
Newer apartment towers with lifts and parking inside the gate. The expressway jams towards Vidyasagar Setu at office hours, so the truck moves outside them.
Dasnagar and Andul Road
Workshops, small factories and houses side by side along a busy road. Lorries and handcarts share the lane, and loading goes quicker before the units open.

Society and building rules
The old houses of central Howrah have no society office, but several families often share one staircase, and they should all know the date. Apartment complexes near Santragachi, on Drainage Canal Road and along the Kona Expressway expect a note to the association, any pending maintenance paid, a lift booking and a daytime slot. Railway families at Liluah, Santragachi or Shalimar move to the date their quarter is due back, and the loading is planned around the handover inspection.

Where the truck can stand
A full-size truck reaches very few addresses in old Howrah. It stands on GT Road, Andul Road or Foreshore Road, and a small tempo does the lanes, or the crew carries on foot where even that will not fit. The station area is the hardest: buses, taxis and hawkers leave no room to stand once the first trains are in. Apartment towers on the Santragachi side have space inside the gate, and Bally and Belur fall in between, depending on which side of GT Road you live.

Traffic and timing
Traffic around Howrah station and the bus stand starts before 8 am and does not let up until late evening. The Kona Expressway and the approach to Vidyasagar Setu are slowest in office hours, and GT Road through Salkia and Bally is busy all day with shop deliveries. Howrah, like the city across the river, limits goods trucks on its main roads for long stretches of the day, so a big truck for a long move is loaded early. Chhath brings huge crowds to the ghats from Shibpur to Bally, and the riverside roads close for it.

Weather and the months to plan around
Howrah has Kolkata's weather but worse drainage. After a heavy monsoon spell between June and September, the low parts of central Howrah, around Tikiapara and Belilious Road, can stay under water well into the next day, and a loaded tempo cannot get through. Summer, April to June, is humid and draining for a crew on a stair carry, so we start at first light. Cyclones off the Bay bring a day or two of wind and rain in some years, usually in May or around October. December and January are the easiest months.

Railway staff and young engineers from IIEST go wherever the job is, often Delhi or Bhubaneswar, while families with roots in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh move back to Patna, Varanasi and the towns around them. Is your Dankuni office the one that handles Howrah?

Our Salkia house has three floors and a very narrow staircase. How do you get the furniture down?
Beds, wardrobes and tables are taken apart on the floor they stand on and carried down in pieces, with extra hands at the landings. If an almirah or a sofa cannot turn on the stairs, the survey decides whether it goes down from a verandah or the roof on ropes. The truck waits on GT Road, and a small tempo runs the goods from the door to it.
Can a move from Howrah across to Kolkata be done in a day?
Yes, for a 2 BHK. The crossing is easy if the truck avoids Howrah Bridge and takes Vidyasagar Setu or Nivedita Setu. The time goes at the two ends: a stair carry out of an older Howrah house, and a Kolkata building that may have its own lift slot or daytime parking rules. Start early and the unloading is usually done by evening.
I live in railway quarters at Liluah and am being transferred. Can you work to my handover date?
Yes. Tell us the vacating date on your order and when you report at the new posting, and we plan the packing and loading backwards from those. Your department's format is followed for the inventory and the GST invoice. If the new posting is far, a car or bike can travel on a carrier and reach on its own.
