Where the truck can stand
Dibrugarh's main roads carry a 17 ft truck easily. The residential lanes off them are tighter, with open drains and scooters parked along them, and there we send in the 14 ft truck or a pickup. Graham Bazar is hard to stop in during business hours. Tea estate roads are private, often single lane and unpaved, sometimes with a narrow culvert, and we check them before choosing the vehicle. After heavy rain some low colonies hold water, and the truck waits on dry ground while goods are carried out.

Graham Bazar, Thana Charali and the station area are busiest from late morning, and traffic on the highway to Tinsukia and the airport road builds in the evening. Bihu in mid April, and Durga Puja and Diwali in autumn, crowd the markets and bring road closures near the pandals. On the estates, the plucking season from spring into autumn keeps garden roads busy with tractors. Pick a weekday morning between November and February if you can.

Weather and the months to plan around
Upper Assam is among the wettest parts of the plains. Rain starts in March or April and is heaviest from June to August, when the Brahmaputra runs high against the embankment and low parts of town can flood after a downpour. Humidity is high even outside the monsoon, so every long move is packed against damp. Winters are cool, with foggy mornings over the river in December and January. November to February is the driest stretch and the easiest time to move.

Usually, though the garden road decides the size. Some estate roads are narrow, unpaved or cross small culverts, and in the monsoon they turn soft. We ask the garden office about the road and, where needed, a smaller vehicle does the last stretch. Entry is arranged through the manager's office before the day.
We are moving to Kolkata. How many days will the truck take?
Kolkata is about 1,500 km by road, through Guwahati and Siliguri, so the truck is several days on the road, more in the monsoon when stretches of the highway slow down. Every load is given a consignment number, with progress updates as it goes, and the goods are packed for the humidity and the distance.
