Shifting homes across Assam
Most of Assam lies in the Brahmaputra valley, a long plain running from Dhubri on the Bengal border to Sadiya in the far east. Lower Assam has Guwahati, the one big city, with the capital at Dispur. Central Assam has Nagaon and Tezpur, and Upper Assam, with Jorhat, Sivasagar, Dibrugarh and Tinsukia, is tea and oil country. South of the Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao hills lies the Barak valley, Bengali-speaking, with Silchar, Karimganj and Hailakandi.
Moves within the Brahmaputra valley are long more than difficult. Guwahati to Dibrugarh is about 440 km on the highway past Kaziranga and Jorhat, a full day or more for a truck, and speed limits are strictly enforced where the road skirts the national park. The Barak valley is harder to reach. From Guwahati the road to Silchar either crosses Meghalaya through Shillong and Jowai or runs through the Dima Hasao hills past Haflong, and both are prone to landslides in the rains.
People come to Assam for oil, tea, government and the forces. Oil India at Duliajan, the refineries at Digboi, Guwahati, Numaligarh and Bongaigaon, ONGC around Sivasagar and the tea estates employ managers and engineers who move between postings. Guwahati has the Northeast Frontier Railway headquarters at Maligaon, the High Court, IIT Guwahati and AIIMS, and it is the base for many who work across the north east. The army and air force have large stations at Tezpur, Jorhat and around Dibrugarh, and young people leave for Bangalore, Delhi NCR and Kolkata.

Homes and buildings
Guwahati has spread across and between its hills, with apartment blocks of four to ten storeys along GS Road, Zoo Road, Beltola and Six Mile, and older Assam-type houses in Uzan Bazar, Pan Bazar and Chandmari. Those are one or two storey homes with timber frames, plastered reed or lath walls and sloping tin roofs, and many still stand across the state. Tea estate managers live in bungalows raised on stilts, with lines of quarters for staff. Oil towns like Duliajan and Digboi, and the railway and cantonment colonies, are planned and gated. In flood-prone areas houses stand on raised plinths.

Between cities
Traffic from the rest of India enters Assam from north Bengal and follows NH 27, the east-west corridor, past Bongaigaon and Nalbari to Guwahati. From there the main road runs east through Nagaon, Kaziranga, Jorhat and Sivasagar to Dibrugarh and Tinsukia. The Brahmaputra is crossed at Guwahati's Saraighat bridges, at Kolia Bhomora near Tezpur, at Bogibeel near Dibrugarh and on the Dhola-Sadiya bridge further east. Roads are flat but often two-lane, with slow stretches through towns and tea gardens, and livestock, rain and flood repairs slow them more.

Moving into or out of Assam
Assam needs no inner line permit, so moving into or within the state works as it does anywhere else in India. Your own used household goods are personal effects, and they travel on an inventory and a declaration, normally with no e-way bill. Any car staying in Assam longer than 12 months needs an AS number, starting with an NOC from the RTO where it is registered now, and BH series plates are open to eligible employees. Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur are different, and each needs an inner line permit for visitors from outside.

Weather and the months to plan around
Assam's rains start early and last long. Thunderstorms arrive in April, the monsoon sets in by June, and heavy rain continues into September and sometimes October. The Brahmaputra and its tributaries flood in several waves, and Barak valley towns, Silchar among them, can be under water for days in a bad year. Humidity stays high for months, so wooden furniture and leather are wrapped well and unwrapped soon after arrival. Bohag Bihu in mid-April and the Ambubachi Mela at Kamakhya in June slow parts of Guwahati. Dry, mild weather from November to February makes those months the simplest for moving.

We are moving on from Guwahati to Itanagar. What permits are needed?
Arunachal Pradesh requires an inner line permit for Indian citizens from outside the state, and that covers the truck driver and each crew member as well as your family. Permits can be applied for online, and the truck cannot enter Arunachal until every one of them is issued, so the date depends on that. Nagaland, Mizoram and Manipur have similar rules, and Assam itself has none.
How do you get a household from Guwahati to Silchar?
By road through Meghalaya, via Shillong and Jowai, which is about 300 km, or through Dima Hasao past Haflong when that road is in better shape. Both are hill roads with landslide risk in the monsoon, so a Silchar move in the rains is booked with a range of dates. Outside the rains, a household packed in Guwahati is usually unloaded in Silchar on the second day.
Our tea estate bungalow is on stilts. Does that change the move?
It adds work. The living floor of a chang bungalow is a full storey up, reached by a wooden staircase, so everything is carried down and heavy pieces are taken apart first. Estate roads turn muddy in the rains, and the truck may stop at the factory or on the main garden road, with a smaller vehicle doing the last stretch. The garden office needs the date and the truck details in advance.
How hard is a monsoon move in Guwahati?
It is the hardest time. Heavy rain floods Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Zoo Road and parts of GS Road within an hour, and the hill roads in the city see small slides. We watch the forecast, choose a morning slot, keep plastic under every outer wrap and load under cover where the building allows. With a free choice of date, go for the cool, dry season that starts in November.
