Shifting homes in Silchar
Silchar is the main town of the Barak valley, a Bengali-speaking city on a loop of the Barak river, low and flat, with hills and tea gardens around it. Many homes are Assam-type houses with tin roofs, timber frames and a raised plinth against water, set in small compounds with a pond or a few betel nut trees. The centre, around Premtala, Janiganj and Fatak Bazar, is dense with shops and houses above them, and three and four storey apartment blocks have spread along Link Road and Hospital Road and into Tarapur and Meherpur.
Flood water rules much of daily life here. When the Barak and its tributaries overflow, as they did in 2022, low parts of Silchar stay under water for days, and many families keep beds and valuables raised. That shapes a move: ground floor homes often have furniture set up on bricks, and after a wet spell a lane may be passable only by a small vehicle. Apartment blocks are simpler, with the lift or stairs as the only question, though few have a lift big enough for furniture.
Government offices, schools, banks and hospitals employ much of Silchar, and the district headquarters draws officers on transfer. Silchar town is compact. Tarapur to Meherpur is about 5 km, while the centre to Ghungoor is under 8 km. A family's 2 BHK rarely needs more than the daylight hours. NIT and Assam University lie further out, around 15 to 20 km, and a move from either is still finished the same day. Houses and apartment blocks around the railway station. The roads are reasonable, but some lanes sit low and hold water after heavy rain.
Ambicapatty
An older residential area of Assam-type houses and small blocks on narrow roads. Most gates can be reached by a 14 ft truck, and the inner lanes by something smaller.
Link Road and Hospital Road
Newer apartment blocks and clinics along busy roads. A truck can stand only briefly, and where a building has a lift, it is usually a small one.
Meherpur and Rangirkhari
Residential colonies of mixed houses and flats. The Rangirkhari junction slows traffic badly at peak hours, so loading is timed around it.
NIT, Assam University and Ghungoor
Campus quarters and hostels outside town, with wide roads inside and the move date set by the estate office. Medical college staff live around Ghungoor.

Society and building rules
Most Silchar homes are independent, and the owner, often living next door or downstairs, is the one to settle with, including the electricity bill and the deposit. The apartment blocks along Link Road and in Tarapur want the secretary told and dues cleared, and moves happen in daytime. NIT, Assam University and medical college quarters go back after an inspection by the estate office. Air force housing at Kumbhirgram needs gate clearance for the vehicle and crew several days ahead.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck is fine on Silchar's main roads. Many residential lanes, though, are narrow, with drains on both sides and little room to turn, so a 14 ft truck or a pickup is often the practical choice. In the market streets the truck cannot stand during business hours. After a flood or heavy rain, low lanes in parts of the town can stay under water, and goods are carried out to where the road is dry. Campus roads at NIT and the university are wide once through the gate.

Traffic in Silchar builds around Premtala, Janiganj and Rangirkhari from late morning, and rickshaws and autos slow the centre through the day. Durga Puja in October is the biggest event of the year, with pandals across the town and roads closed for the immersion. A long load for Guwahati depends on the hill road through Meghalaya or Dima Hasao, and it leaves early so the hill sections are crossed in daylight. Inside town, dry-season weekday mornings go smoothest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Silchar is wet and humid for much of the year. Pre-monsoon storms arrive in April, and from May to September the rain is heavy, rivers rise and low parts of town flood, sometimes for days. The hill roads to Guwahati are prone to landslides in the same months, so a long move gets a wide delivery window. Even the winter air is damp, so wooden and leather pieces get a moisture barrier whatever the month. The weeks from November through February bring dry, mild days, and moves then are simplest.

Our house is in a low part of town that floods. Can you still move it?
Yes. We check the approach first, since a lane that held water may still be soft, and use a smaller vehicle if the truck cannot get close. Anything that got wet is dried before packing where possible, and damp furniture is wrapped in breathable layers so mould does not grow on the way. The quote is written after a video survey.
Why does Kolkata take so long to reach by road from Silchar?
Kolkata is about 1,400 km by road, because the route runs north through the hills to Guwahati and then west through Siliguri.
