Shifting homes in Puducherry
Puducherry's old town is a neat grid, split by the old canal. East of it, the French quarter runs to the sea: colonial houses with high ceilings, shuttered windows, courtyards and heavy doors on streets such as Rue Romain Rolland and Rue Dumas, many of them now guest houses or Ashram buildings. West of the canal, the Tamil quarter has terraced houses with a thinnai and a pillared verandah on the street, deep rooms and a courtyard behind. Beyond the boulevards the town has spread into Lawspet, Reddiarpalayam, Muthialpet and out along the ECR.
Moving out of an old house here takes care. Wooden staircases are steep, doorways are tall but narrow, and floors of old tiles or lime plaster crack if a heavy almirah is dragged, so furniture is lifted and carried on padding. The newer areas are simpler, with independent houses, small apartment blocks and a few gated communities, though some of their low streets take water in the monsoon.
People come for JIPMER, Pondicherry University at Kalapet, the engineering and medical colleges, the Sri Aurobindo Ashram and Auroville just across the border in Tamil Nadu. The industrial estates at Mettupalayam, Thattanchavady and Sedarapet employ managers and staff, and tourism runs guest houses and restaurants. Retired couples and families from Chennai and Bangalore buy houses here, while doctors and students leave once a course or posting ends. Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam belong to the same territory, and government staff transfer between them.

Packers and movers charges in Puducherry
Puducherry is small. The French quarter to Lawspet is about 5 km, and Kalapet to Ariyankuppam, the town's full length along the coast, around 18 km. One day covers an ordinary flat, door to door. Time goes on the old buildings, where every piece comes down a narrow stair by hand, on the one-way grid of the old town, and on weekend tourist traffic along MG Road, Mission Street and the ECR. A heritage house full of decades of furniture usually needs a second day.

The French quarter
Heritage houses and guest houses between the canal and the sea. Streets are narrow, several are one-way, and Beach Road shuts to vehicles in the evening, so loading is done in the morning.
The Tamil quarter
Terraced houses sharing walls, with thinnais on the street. The truck stands at the end of the street, and furniture comes out across the front verandah.
Lawspet and the airport road
Independent houses and newer apartment blocks on the north-west side. The roads fit a 14 ft truck, though a few cross streets flood in heavy rain.
Gorimedu and JIPMER
Staff quarters, hostels and rented flats around the hospital. Quarters follow JIPMER's vacating dates, and the Tindivanam road is busy at hospital hours.
Muthialpet
Dense streets on the north side with old and new houses side by side. Lanes narrow quickly off the main road, and a mini truck takes some addresses.
Kalapet and the ECR
The university, newer colleges and houses facing the sea along the East Coast Road. Wide road and easy loading, with salt air that makes damp-proof packing worth the trouble.

Society and building rules
The old town has few associations, but many heritage houses belong to families living in France or Chennai, and a tenant needs the owner's word before anything leaves. Guest houses converted from homes often have a manager who sets the hours. The newer apartment blocks in Lawspet and along the ECR want notice, cleared maintenance and a daytime slot. Quarters at JIPMER, the university and government departments are each handed back by their own procedure, and loading is arranged around it.

Where the truck can stand
The old town is a grid of narrow, mostly one-way streets. A 14 ft truck fits many of them early in the day, but parked cars and scooters make turning hard, and Beach Road and parts of the French quarter close to vehicles at set hours. Where the street is too tight, a mini truck carries goods out to the lorry waiting on one of the boulevards. Lawspet, Kalapet and the ECR areas take a full-size lorry easily. In the rains, low streets in Muthialpet and Krishna Nagar flood, and the truck waits for the water to go down.

Traffic and timing
Weekends bring tourists from Chennai and Bangalore, and MG Road, Mission Street, the ECR and the roads around the French quarter slow down from Friday evening, so weekday mornings are easiest. The Masi Magam festival in February or March brings temple deities in procession to the beach, the Villianur temple car festival fills that road, and New Year's Eve closes much of the sea front. Deepavali shopping packs Nehru Street and the Goubert market.

Weather and the months to plan around
Puducherry sits on the cyclone coast. Most of the year's rain falls between October and December, often in a few very heavy days, and cyclones have crossed close to the town, Thane in 2011 and Fengal in 2024 among them. Low areas flood quickly, and the sea air keeps everything damp, so wood, leather and electronics are packed with a moisture barrier. May and June are hot and sticky, near 38°C. January to March, dry and breezy, is the gentlest time to move.

Our house in the French quarter has a steep wooden staircase. How will you get the furniture down?
Carefully and in pieces. Beds, wardrobes and tables are opened up upstairs, and each part is carried down padded so it does not mark the old woodwork or the lime plaster walls. Anything that will not come apart is measured beforehand, and if it cannot turn on the stair we plan to lower it from a window or terrace by rope. That goes into the written quote.
Can I pack liquor bought in Puducherry with my household goods?
Please do not. Liquor is cheaper in the territory than in Tamil Nadu, and police check vehicles leaving Puducherry at the border checkposts. Bottles found in a household load can hold up the truck and land the driver in trouble, which is why they stay out of our cartons. Settle what to do with them before moving day.
Is the cyclone season a bad time to move?
It is the hardest time. From October to December the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain, and a cyclone warning can stop all work for a day or two. If your date is fixed, we keep a fallback day in hand, wrap everything against water and load in dry hours. If it is not, January to March is dry, cooler and much easier.
I am finishing my residency at JIPMER. Can you work to my quarters vacating date?
Yes. Once you have the vacating date and know your next posting, packing is timed to finish before the hostel or estate office inspection. A small household of books, a bed and cartons is quick to pack. If the next posting is far off, we check for space on a truck already going that way, which is never guaranteed, and a two-wheeler can travel by carrier.
