Shriwardhan is an old coastal town, the birthplace of Balaji Vishwanath, the first Peshwa, whose memorial stands in the town. The old houses are large, with courtyards, tiled roofs and verandahs, set in wadis of coconut and betel nut, and Shriwardhan's supari has a name of its own. Along the beach road and around Diveagar and Harihareshwar, holiday homes, cottages and homestays have come up for visitors from Mumbai. Jivna Bandar, the fishing harbour, is a close neighbourhood of Koli families.
Many houses here are opened only a few times a year, for Ganeshotsav, the summer holidays or a family wedding, because the owners live in Mumbai. When one is finally cleared, the contents are old and heavy: teak cots, brass vessels, pickle jars and chests of papers, often damp from months in closed rooms. The plantation lanes to these houses run between stone walls and areca palms, with no room to turn, and a truck rarely reaches the door.
Work in the town is in fishing, the plantations, tourism, the schools and the taluka offices, and the Dighi port to the north has added some jobs. Young people leave for Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, as their parents did, and the flow back comes with retirement or a second home. Holiday home owners furnish and refurnish their houses between tourist seasons, and homestay owners replace beds and linen before the winter rush.

Government quarters for the taluka offices are handed back after an inspection.

Where the truck can stand
The road in from Mhasla and the main street take a 14 ft truck. Beyond that the plantation lanes are the rule: narrow, walled, often unpaved, with no turning space, so a pickup or the crew carries from the road. Near the beach, sand stops a loaded vehicle. The coast roads to Diveagar and Harihareshwar are winding and narrow, with tourist cars at weekends. A 17 ft truck is almost never sent here.

Weekends and school holidays bring tourists from Mumbai to the beaches, and the roads to Diveagar and Harihareshwar fill up. Ganeshotsav is the biggest event, when families return from Mumbai and every house opens. Harihareshwar draws pilgrims on Mahashivratri and other festival days. The harbour is busy around the auctions. The best time for a move is a weekday in the dry season, starting early.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon is heavy from June to September, with strong wind off the sea, and the boats stay ashore through the fishing ban in June and July. The plantation lanes turn to mud, and some roads flood. Salt air is hard on wood, metal and electronics in every season, and a house shut through the rains smells of damp by October. The cool, dry winter months from November to February suit a move best.

Do you cover Diveagar and Harihareshwar as well?
Yes. Both are about 20 km away along winding coast roads, and a move there fits in a day. Homestays and holiday homes in both places often sit down narrow lanes or near sand, so we check the approach. Avoid them at weekends and on festival days, when tourists and pilgrims fill the roads.
When is the best time to move here?
From November to February, once the rains have gone and the lanes have dried out. Avoid the Ganeshotsav week, when families come home and the roads fill, and the monsoon, when lanes turn to mud and the wind comes off the sea. A weekday start in the dry season, loaded before the afternoon heat, is ideal.
