Mangaon is where the roads of south Raigad meet. NH 66 runs through the middle, the road west leaves for Mhasla, Shriwardhan and Harihareshwar, and the Tamhini road climbs east over the Sahyadri. The town is a long bazaar along the highway with houses behind it, the taluka offices and new apartment buildings on the outskirts. Around it are villages of tiled houses among paddy fields and hills.
Two institutions have changed the town. Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University at Lonere brings students, faculty and staff who live on campus or rent rooms and flats nearby, and they move at the start and end of every academic year. The Vile Bhagad industrial area, on the road towards Tamhini, has POSCO's steel processing plant and other units, with engineers and contract workers who rent in Mangaon or live in company housing.
For a move that means three kinds of job: a student's room or a faculty flat near Lonere, a company or rented flat for plant staff, and a family house in the bazaar or a village. The last usually holds the most, with wooden cots, steel cupboards, grain drums and brass. People leave Mangaon for Mumbai and Navi Mumbai, plant staff move on to steel centres elsewhere, and engineering graduates scatter across the country.

The highway takes any truck, though it is no place to stand while loading, so the truck turns into a side road. The bazaar lanes behind the highway are narrow and busy, and a pickup does the shuttling there. At Lonere and Vile Bhagad the roads are wide and the gates are the only question. The village roads towards Mhasla and Nizampur are narrow tar with soft edges, and in the monsoon a smaller vehicle is the safer choice.

Traffic and timing
NH 66 is the main factor. It is slow through the widening works, and before Ganeshotsav and Holi it fills with families driving home from Mumbai to the villages, with heavy vehicles restricted for some days. Students leave Lonere in a rush when exams end, and hostel moves bunch into a single week. A weekday morning outside these peaks, with the truck loaded before noon, is the most reliable.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mangaon gets the heavy rain of inland Raigad, where the monsoon clouds meet the ghats, from June to September. The rivers and streams around town rise quickly, and the Tamhini ghat becomes slow with fog and water running across the road. Village lanes turn to mud. April and May bring humid heat close to 38°C. The dry months from November to February, with cool mornings, are the best time for a move.

Is the highway widening a problem for a move?
