Shifting homes in Dapoli
Dapoli sits on a plateau a few kilometres back from the sea, and its cooler air earned it the name Mini Mahabaleshwar. The British kept a camp here, and the town centre is still called Camp Dapoli. The Dr Balasaheb Sawant Konkan Krishi Vidyapeeth, the agricultural university for the Konkan, has its main campus in the town, with faculty quarters, hostels and research farms. Around it are old tiled houses, new bungalows on large plots and a few apartment buildings.
The coast below the plateau has changed a great deal. Murud, Karde, Ladghar and Harnai were fishing and farming villages, and now have homestays, holiday homes and bungalows owned by families from Mumbai and the cities over the ghats. Many stand in orchards of mango, cashew and coconut behind laterite walls, reached by lanes that end in sand. For a move the approach to the house is often the whole problem, and the survey starts there.
University staff arrive and leave on postings, and students come for degrees in agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Retired couples settle here for the climate, and second-home owners furnish or clear their houses in stages. Young people from the villages leave for Mumbai, and fishing families at Harnai move along the coast. Khed, 30 km inland, has the nearest railway station, and Mumbai is five or six hours away by road.

The town centre, with the ST stand, shops and older buildings. Roads suit a 14 ft truck, but the market road fills by mid morning.
The Krishi Vidyapeeth campus
Faculty quarters and hostels on wide campus roads. The estate office sets the vacating date, and the truck enters with the university's permission.
Murud and Karde
Beach villages with homestays and holiday homes. Beyond the tar, several lanes are soft beach sand that no loaded truck should try, so trolleys and a pickup take over.
Ladghar and Burondi
Villages up the coast from Karde, reached by a narrow road with steep bends. A smaller vehicle is the right choice, especially in the rain.
Harnai and Anjarle
The fishing harbour, with its beach fish auction, and Anjarle beyond it. Lanes are packed when the boats come in, so loading is done earlier in the day.

Society and building rules
Few buildings here have societies. University quarters are handed back after an estate office inspection, with dues and keys cleared. The small apartment buildings in town want notice to the secretary. Homestays and holiday homes are often run by a caretaker for an owner in Mumbai, and the caretaker will want the owner's instructions before letting anything leave. Gram panchayats ask for nothing, though a truck on a shared village lane is worth a word with the neighbours.

Where the truck can stand
The main road through Camp Dapoli and the campus roads take a 14 ft truck. The roads down to the beaches are narrow, winding and busy with tourist cars at weekends, and at the bottom many lanes turn to sand. The truck halts on solid tar, and the goods go on by pickup or trolley. Orchard houses on the plateau are reached by kutcha tracks that go soft in the monsoon. A 17 ft truck is rarely the right choice in Dapoli.

Traffic and timing
Weekends and holidays bring tourists to the beaches, filling the roads from Dapoli down to Murud, Karde and Harnai, and Diwali, Christmas and the May holidays are the busiest weeks. The university's calendar sets student and staff moves, with a rush at the end of the academic year. Ganeshotsav and Shimga bring families home and processions onto the village roads. A weekday outside the holiday weeks is the easiest time.

Weather and the months to plan around
From June to September Dapoli is drenched, and the plateau can sit in cloud for days. The roads down to the beaches get slippery and some low lanes flood. Salt air near the shore works on metal and electronics all year, and a holiday home's appliances are checked before they are packed. Winter brings cool nights on the plateau, cooler than on the beaches below. April and May are humid but milder than inland. November to February is the best time.

The estate office usually wants the vehicle details for the gate and the quarters cleared by the date it gives you. We load a day early so there is time for any cleaning or repairs before the handover. Pack or check research papers and samples yourself. Whoever pays, the university or a new employer, gets the GST invoice in its name.
Our holiday home at Karde is down a sand lane. Can you still move the furniture?
Yes, with a smaller vehicle or trolleys for the last stretch. A loaded truck on sand digs in, so it parks on firm ground and the goods are carried or ferried across. A video walk down the lane comes before the quote, so the carry is priced in. Salt air may have rusted hinges and fittings, which we check before anything is opened up.
