Nagothane is a small town on the Amba river and NH 66 that grew alongside one very large plant. India's first gas cracker complex was built here by IPCL in the late 1980s and is now Reliance's Nagothane Manufacturing Division, with a self-contained township of quarters for its staff. The old town is a bazaar along the highway and the approach to the Amba bridge, with houses of one or two storeys, and around it are villages among paddy fields and low hills.
A township move follows the company's system. Quarters come with some furniture, so the load is often a household's own things without the heavy beds or wardrobes, and it is quoted on the item list. Security at the gate is told about the truck and its crew beforehand, the estate staff inspect the quarters before taking the keys, and the posting order fixes the day. In the bazaar and the villages the job is the reverse: no paperwork at all, older houses with full lofts, and lanes that decide what vehicle can come.
The plant draws engineers, operators and contractors from across India, and transfers link it with the company's other sites, most of them in Gujarat: Hazira near Surat, Vadodara, Dahej and Jamnagar. Where the truck can stand
Within the township, broad roads let the truck back up to each block. Outside, the highway is no place to load, with tankers and buses running at speed and little shoulder. The bazaar lanes and the station road take a 14 ft truck with care, and the village roads, raised above paddy fields with soft edges, need a smaller vehicle in the monsoon. By the river a few lanes are so tight that the truck stops at the mouth and the crew walks everything out.

Traffic and timing
Shift changes at the plant fill the township gates and the highway with buses and two-wheelers, so loading is timed between them. The highway is slow through the day with tankers and Goa traffic, and very slow in the days before Ganeshotsav and at the start of long weekends. The market is busiest in the mornings. A weekday mid morning, after the shift traffic has cleared, is usually the smoothest time to load in the township.

Weather and the months to plan around
Nagothane lies in the wet Raigad belt, and between June and September it rains hard for days on end. In the worst spells the Amba overflows into the low parts of town and the fields, and the highway near the bridge can close. Roads through the villages turn to mud and the highway gets potholed. Packing gets a waterproof layer and tarpaulins go over the truck. Summer is humid, in the mid 30s. November to February brings dry weather and the easiest roads of the year.
