Shifting homes in Shirur
Shirur, called Ghodnadi in older records, stands on the Ghod river where the Ahmednagar highway crosses it. The old town is the market for the farms of the taluka, with shops and two storey houses along narrow lanes near the river. The newer town reaches out along the highway and the Pabal and Nhavara roads, a spread of bungalows, row houses and low apartment blocks. Many families farm onions, sugarcane and vegetables and keep a house in town as well as one on the land.
The biggest change came from Ranjangaon, about 20 km back along the highway. Its MIDC holds large plants, LG Electronics and the car factory Fiat set up among them, and a crowd of smaller suppliers. Engineers, trainees and contract workers live in company flats, in rooms at Karegaon and Ranjangaon, and in Shirur and Shikrapur. They arrive with little and can leave at short notice, and a move for one of them is often a single room: a bed, a trunk and a fridge.
Shikrapur, where the Chakan road meets the highway, has grown into a small town of its own, and Sanaswadi and Koregaon Bhima nearby have factories and housing too. Government staff, bank officers and teachers transfer in and out of the taluka offices and schools in Shirur. The town also sees a steady flow of farmers' children who study elsewhere and then settle in the cities, while their parents stay on the land.

Shirur has hardly any society offices, so everything is settled with the landlord: final rent, the electricity reading and the deposit. Company flats in Ranjangaon are handed back to the HR or estate office, which usually checks the furniture it supplied against a list. Rented rooms near the plants change hands quickly, and owners like the room empty and swept on the day you leave. Small apartment blocks in Shikrapur want notice to the secretary and the dues paid.

Where the truck can stand
The highway side takes a 17 ft truck without trouble, and so do the MIDC roads once security lets the vehicle in. The old town lanes near the river are narrow and busy with handcarts and two-wheelers, so a tempo does the shuttle. Room buildings at Karegaon and Shikrapur often stand on lanes lined with bikes, where the truck waits at the corner. Farm addresses on the Pabal and Nhavara side suit a truck in dry weather, and after rain the final few hundred metres go by pickup.

Traffic and timing
The Ahmednagar highway is busy at all hours, and worst at Ranjangaon and Shikrapur when the plants change shifts. Every 1 January, huge crowds gather at the Vijay Stambh at Perne near Koregaon Bhima, and that stretch of the highway runs under diversions for a day or two. Ranjangaon's temple draws crowds on Sankashti Chaturthi and through Ganesh festival. The Shirur market is busiest in the morning. A weekday start after the morning shift change usually gives the clearest road.

Weather and the months to plan around
Shirur gets modest, uneven rain, most of it between late June and September, since the Ghod valley sits well east of the ghats. A heavy shower still makes the lanes near the river muddy and turns farm tracks soft for a day or two. Summer heat builds through April and May towards 40°C, with dust blowing off the fields, so loading starts at 7 am and electronics stay out of the sun. Winter, from November to February, brings cool dry weather, the simplest season to move in.

My company flat in Ranjangaon has to be handed back. Can you work to that date?
Yes. Tell us when the estate or HR office wants the keys, and packing is done the evening before with loading that morning. Company furniture stays behind, so your own things are listed apart from it. Ranjangaon's gates want the lorry and crew details ahead of time, and your employer can have a GST invoice in its name.
Will the 1 January crowds at Koregaon Bhima affect my move?
Only if your load uses that stretch of the highway on 1 January or the day before. Traffic is diverted and the road near Perne and Koregaon Bhima fills with people. A move inside Shirur itself is not affected, but for anything going towards Shikrapur or beyond, pick another day.
I am a contract worker going home to Beed. Can I send a few things?
Yes. A bed, a cupboard, a trunk and some cartons go in a small vehicle, and Beed is about 180 km, so they usually reach home the same day or early the next morning. We can also see whether a shared truck is going that way, which is cheaper but never certain. Your motorbike can travel on a carrier.
