Shifting homes in Manchar
Trade built Manchar. It is the largest town in Ambegaon taluka, and farmers from the villages bring potatoes, onions and vegetables to its market yard, where traders load them onto lorries for Mumbai and other cities. The older part of town grew around that trade, with shops at street level, families above them and godowns in the lanes. Bungalows, row houses and a handful of apartment blocks now line the highway and the road west towards Ghodegaon.
A trader's household is rarely only a household. There may be sacks and crates in a godown, a shop counter or two, and a family flat upstairs, and each part needs a place at the new address. Farm families bring a different kind of work: heavy wooden cots, steel cupboards, grain drums and a store room left untouched for years.

Formalities in Manchar are light. Most homes are independent or in small buildings without a society office, so settle the rent, the electricity bill and the deposit with the owner before the day. Student rooms near the college are usually let by the term, and owners want the room empty and the keys back when the lease ends. Outside the centre, a truck reaches most gates easily on wide, flat roads. The market lanes are the exception: from dawn they fill with lorries loading produce, tractors and handcarts, and a truck cannot turn or stand there. The main vehicle waits on the highway side and a tempo shuttles, with loading done early. On the roads west to Ghodegaon and Dimbhe a full truck is fine until the last stretch to some villages, which is narrow and sometimes steep.

The market yard is the town's clock. Trading starts early and the lanes around it are jammed through the morning, so a move in the centre loads at first light or waits for the afternoon lull. The Nashik highway carries heavy traffic in both directions and slows at the Manchar and Narayangaon junctions. In the crushing season, from about November to April, cane trucks crowd the roads near the sugar factory. The end of the college term brings a rush of student moves, so book those days early.

Weather and the months to plan around
Manchar lies between the hills and the plains, so the monsoon is moderate in town and heavy to the west, where Bhimashankar and Dimbhe can see rain for weeks. After heavy spells the market lanes turn muddy and village tracks soft, and loads are covered and lined with plastic. Summer is hot and dry, with afternoons in the high 30s through April and May, and the crew loads early. The clear, cool weeks between November and February suit a move best.
