Shrigonda is a taluka town in the south of Ahilyanagar district, in cane country. Water from the Kukadi canal and the Ghod and Bhima rivers has turned much of the taluka to sugarcane, and the sugar factories are the biggest employers. The town itself is small, with an old market centre and newer colonies of houses around it, and nearly everyone lives in an independent house with a compound. Flats are rare.
A house here tends to be large and full: heavy wooden furniture, a big kitchen, sacks of grain, farm tools and a store room of things kept for years. Many families also have a house in town and another on the farm, and a move may mean bringing things from both. The loading end is usually easy, a ground floor house with a compound the truck can enter.
The town has its own history too. It is known for the samadhi of Sant Shaikh Muhammad, a saint of the Varkari tradition, whose yatra draws crowds each year. Teachers, bank staff and officials come on transfer to the taluka offices and schools, sugar factory staff move between factories, and young people leave for jobs in the cities.

A move within Shrigonda town is only a few km, and out to Kashti or the farms in the taluka is usually under 30 km. Even a large house is loaded and unloaded in one day. Society and building rules
There are almost no housing societies in Shrigonda. What matters instead is the owner of a rented house, who should agree the date, the deposit refund and the keys beforehand, and the neighbours on shared lanes in the old market. Sugar factory and government staff quarters are handed back through the office concerned, so check the vacating date and any clearance it needs. Schools and banks that provide housing have their own rules.

Where the truck can stand
Most houses in Shrigonda have a compound or an open front, and a full-size truck can pull up at the door or drive in. The exceptions are the old market streets, where the truck halts on the main road and everything is hand-carried to it, and the field tracks to farmhouses. Those hold a loaded truck in the dry season, but after heavy rain it waits on the tarmac and the last stretch is walked.

Shrigonda's traffic is light except at two times. During the crushing season, roughly November to April, tractors with loaded cane trailers crowd the roads to the factories and slow everything, worst near the factory gates. The weekly market fills the town centre, and the yatra of Sant Shaikh Muhammad brings large crowds for a few days. Otherwise, any weekday morning is easy.

Shrigonda is dry and hot for most of the year. The monsoon is light and uneven, and a rainy day in town hardly affects a move, though field roads turn muddy. April and May are the hard months, past 40°C on many afternoons, so the crew starts at dawn and the fridge and television travel under cover. The cool months of November to February are the best for moving.
