Shifting homes in Chakan
Chakan was a market town with a fort long before it became an auto hub. The fort, Sangramdurg, is remembered for holding out for weeks against a Mughal army in 1660, and the market yard is still a big onion market. Since the MIDC arrived, the villages around it, Mahalunge, Kharabwadi, Nanekarwadi, Medankarwadi and Kuruli among them, have filled with buildings of rented rooms, small blocks of 1 RK and 1 BHK flats, and a few gated towers for engineers.
Most homes here are small and quick to pack: a bed, a cupboard, a stove, a fridge and a two-wheeler. What makes a Chakan move harder is the setting. Room buildings are crammed along lanes with no space to swing a truck round, their stairs are narrow and often bolted to the outside wall, and owners want the room empty on the day the next tenant arrives. Engineers in the newer societies have a lift and a slot to book, and a larger household that fills a full truck.
The plants set the pattern of the year. Bajaj Auto, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Mahindra and Bosch all have factories here, with rings of suppliers around them, and each hires engineers, trainees and contract staff who arrive from Marathwada, Vidarbha, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and beyond. Contracts end, trainees are taken on or let go, and managers are transferred to other plants, so people are always coming and going. Many who start in a rented room later buy a flat in a society nearby or in Pimpri Chinchwad.

Distances inside the Chakan belt are short. Mahalunge to Medankarwadi is about 6 km, and the gaothan to Kuruli or Nighoje under 10, so a room or a 1 BHK often moves in a morning and a family flat by evening. The drive is where the hours go. A loaded truck can sit at Talegaon Chowk for the best part of an hour at peak times, and the service roads through the estate fill at every change of shift. Loading from a narrow room lane also takes longer than the packing.

Chakan gaothan and the market yard
The old settlement around Sangramdurg and the onion market. Lanes are narrow and the yard fills with lorries and tractors, so loading starts at first light.
Talegaon Chowk
The junction where the Talegaon road meets the Nashik highway, and the worst jam in the belt. Societies near it load outside the peak hours.
Mahalunge and Kharabwadi
Rows of rented rooms and small flats close to the plants. Lanes are tight and crowded at shift change, so a tempo pulls up at the building while the big truck idles out on the main road.
Medankarwadi and Nanekarwadi
Newer societies with lifts beside older room buildings. Most gates here admit a 14 ft truck, though in some projects the builder's office still hands out passes.
Kuruli and Nighoje
The MIDC phases north and west of town, where company flats and worker housing sit next to the plants. Gate passes are needed inside the estate.
The Alandi road
Housing along the road towards Alandi, quiet for most of the year and packed with pilgrims around Kartiki Ekadashi in November.

Society and building rules
Room buildings have no society, only an owner who usually lives nearby and returns the deposit once the room is checked and the meter read. Settle that the evening before, since the next tenant may be waiting. Newer societies near the highway want notice, a lift slot and cleared maintenance, and some ask for the owner's consent if you rent. Company accommodation and guest houses inside the MIDC have their own vacating checklist, and the truck and crew need a gate pass before they can enter the estate.

Where the truck can stand
The Nashik highway, the Talegaon road and the main MIDC roads take any size of truck, but standing on them to load is another matter, since the traffic never stops. In Mahalunge, Kharabwadi and the gaothan, bikes parked on both sides squeeze each lane to single file, so the truck halts where the lane joins the road and a tempo runs back and forth. Inside the estate, trucks stop where security directs them. Some worker housing is reached by unpaved tracks that become deep mud in the monsoon.

Traffic and timing
Plan around two things: the shift changes and Talegaon Chowk. Plants here generally change shifts early in the morning, mid afternoon and late at night, and for half an hour each time the roads fill with buses and bikes. The highway jam at the chowk is worst in the morning and early evening. Loading from about 9.30 am, once the day shift is inside the gates, and leaving before the afternoon change usually dodges both. Kartiki Ekadashi and the Ashadhi palkhi departure from Alandi fill the Alandi road with pilgrims for days.

Weather and the months to plan around
Chakan's open plateau lies well east of the Sahyadri crest, and its monsoon is moderate: steady rain in July and August, with heavy spells that leave unpaved lanes and some estate service roads under mud and standing water. Each carton gets a plastic lining, and a sheet is stretched over the loading. April and May bring afternoons near 38°C and dust lifting off empty plots, so everything is wrapped inside the room. The dry, cool stretch from November to February gives the fewest problems.

I live in a rented room in Mahalunge. Can you move just a few things?
Yes. A bed, a cupboard, a fridge and some cartons make a small job for a tempo and two or three people. For a trip home to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh or Marathwada, ask us to look for room on a shared truck heading there, which is cheaper and slower, though never promised. A motorbike rides separately on a carrier.
What does the MIDC need before a truck enters company housing?
Plant security generally wants the truck's registration, a list of the crew and the driver's licence before the day, and sometimes a letter from your HR department. Tell us the rules when you book. We also fix the loading slot so the truck is not stuck at the gate in the middle of a shift change.
I am being transferred from a Chakan plant to Nashik. How does the move work?
Nashik is about 180 km up the highway, so a flat packed in the morning usually reaches you that evening or early the next day. The company can be billed directly, with a GST invoice and an itemised inventory. Tell us your new society's shifting rules and the date your company flat here must be handed back.
Will the traffic at Talegaon Chowk add hours to my move?
It can add close to an hour if the truck meets it at the wrong time. We load after the morning rush and aim to cross the chowk before the evening one, and for addresses on the far side we sometimes use the roads through the estate. If your plant's weekly off falls midweek, that day is often the quickest for a move.
