The town was called Khed until it was renamed for Shivram Hari Rajguru, the revolutionary hanged with Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev in 1931, who was born here. His family's wada on the bank of the Bhima is now a memorial. The old town grew along the river, with narrow lanes, temples and houses built wall to wall. The tehsil office, the courts and the Panchayat Samiti sit near the centre, and newer housing has spread out along the highway.
The old name still matters when you book, because there is another Khed in Ratnagiri district, on the Konkan coast. Homes here range from old wadas near the river to bungalows and row houses in the colonies, and small apartment buildings on the highway side, most of them two to four storeys with stairs and, in the newer blocks, a small lift. The courts and the government offices keep a steady stream of transfers passing through.
Chakan's plants are about 10 km south, and many people who work there live in Rajgurunagar, where rents are lower and a family can take a house with a yard. Farming families from the villages west towards Chas, Wada and the Bhimashankar hills keep a second home in town for school and the market. When people leave, it is usually for a job in a bigger city or a transfer to another taluka.

Society and building rules
Paperwork is light in Rajgurunagar, where homes are mostly independent houses or small resident-run blocks. Tell the secretary the date, clear any dues, and in a rented flat get the owner's go-ahead, especially if the owner lives elsewhere. Landlords of independent houses want the electricity bill settled and the keys back on the day. Where the truck can stand
Most colonies and highway-side blocks can take a 14 or 17 ft truck right to the gate. The old town near the river is another matter: lanes are narrow, some end in steps, and there is nowhere to turn, so a tempo makes runs to the truck, which waits where the lane meets a proper road. The highway through town carries heavy traffic, and a truck cannot stand on it to load. In the villages towards Chas and Wada, roads narrow and climb, and after rain the last stretch may be done by a smaller vehicle.

Traffic and timing
The Nashik highway is the town's main artery, busy through the day with trucks, buses and cars heading north and to the Chakan plants. Traffic peaks in the morning and early evening, around the shift changes. The courts and the tehsil office make the centre busy on weekdays from about 10 am. Commemorations at the Rajguru memorial on 23 March draw crowds into the old town. A move goes quickest if it starts early on a weekday or runs on a Sunday, when the offices are shut.

Weather and the months to plan around
Rajgurunagar gets more rain than the dry country to the east and much less than the hills to the west, where Bhimashankar stays soaked for months. In July and August the Bhima rises, low roads by the river can go under after heavy rain, and village approaches turn to mud. Cartons get plastic linings, and the loading is done beneath a sheet. Summers reach the high 30s in April and May, and loading begins early. The dry, cool months from November to February are easiest.

Is Rajgurunagar the same as Khed?
Yes, the town is the seat of Khed taluka and many people still use the old name. There is also a Khed in Ratnagiri district, on the Konkan coast, several hours away. When you book, give us the full address with the pin code, and we confirm which Khed it is before the quote goes out.
We work in Chakan and are moving to a house in Rajgurunagar. Is it a one-day job?
Yes. It is about 10 km, so a 2 or 3 BHK can be emptied, driven over and arranged in its new rooms within a single day. The Chakan end usually takes longer, with a lift slot or a gate pass to arrange, so we start there early. The highway between the two is slowest around shift change, and we time the drive to miss it.
