Shifting homes in Saswad
Saswad is the seat of Purandar taluka and one of the older towns in the district. The samadhi of Sant Sopandev, the younger brother of Dnyaneshwar, stands in the town, and the stone Sangameshwar temple sits where the Chambli joins the Karha. The peths around them are close-packed wadas and houses of two or three storeys, some a century old. Newer Saswad has spread along the roads to Jejuri and Hadapsar, with bungalows on their own plots and a few apartment buildings.
Wada moves take time. Stairs are steep and wooden, doors are low, and a house lived in by one family for generations fills a truck with brass, grain drums, trunks and heavy cots. We open up what can be opened, carry the rest with care and load from the nearest lane wide enough for a tempo. A bungalow on the Jejuri road is the opposite job: a gate the truck can reach, a short carry, and a garden, a terrace and a store room to empty.
Purandar is orchard country, known for its figs and custard apples, and farming families make up much of the town. The taluka offices, the courts, the schools and the government hospital bring staff on transfer. Plotted layouts and farmhouses have come up around Saswad, and families who work in Hadapsar and Magarpatta have built homes here for the space. Younger people still leave for jobs in bigger cities, and the older generation often stays in the family house.

Society and building rules
Most of Saswad lives in independent houses with no society office in the picture. Fix the date with the landlord, clear the last rent and the power bill, and collect the deposit before the truck leaves. The newer apartment buildings are small and run by the residents, who want to know the date and see the dues cleared. Government staff leaving quarters should have their department's inspection date, since the loading is planned around it. For a wada in the peths, a word with the neighbours helps, because the tempo will block the lane.

Where the truck can stand
Beyond the peths, Saswad's roads are broad and most houses have a gate a truck can back up to. Inside them, lanes are narrow, some have steps, and shops spill onto the road, so goods go out by tempo to a truck parked at the nearest wide corner. Farm plots and orchards are often reached by a kachcha track, which after rain is no place for a loaded truck. Dive Ghat, on the road north-west of town, is short and steep with sharp bends, and it is climbed in low gear at walking pace.

Traffic and timing
Two pilgrimages close Saswad's roads. In June or July the Dnyaneshwar palkhi comes over Dive Ghat on its way to Pandharpur and halts in Saswad, and the ghat road and the town are given over to a vast crowd of warkaris. At Jejuri, 17 km away, Somvati Amavasya and the Khandoba festivals bring crowds and heavy traffic. Outside those dates the town is busiest around the market in the late morning. The ghat is slowest on weekend evenings, so a weekday morning start works best.

Weather and the months to plan around
Rain reaches Saswad after the Sahyadri have wrung most of it out, so the monsoon is lighter than on the western side of the district, with showers from June to September and few days of steady downpour. Dive Ghat's bends still hold water and loose gravel after heavy rain, and the truck comes down it in daylight. By April and May afternoons touch 38°C and Purandar's roads are dusty, so loading starts early. Between November and February the cool air makes moving far kinder on everyone.

In the monsoon we prefer to come down in daylight while the bends are wet. Delicate pieces are packed with extra padding for the gradient.

Yes. The roads towards Narayanpur and the fort climb and narrow, and farm tracks can be rough, so the approach is seen before a vehicle is picked. If the truck cannot reach the door, a smaller vehicle does the last stretch.
