Wai grew along the Krishna, and its old peths come down to a string of stone ghats and temples, the Dholya Ganpati among them. Houses in these lanes are old, some of them wadas with thick walls, wooden pillars and steep inner staircases, and they stand close together on streets a car can barely pass. The newer town has spread out along the Panchgani and Surur roads, with bungalows, row houses and a few small apartment buildings.
Many families in the old town have been here for generations, and their houses hold furniture made to stay: heavy beds, cupboards, and lofts full of trunks. The more practical point is that the town sits at the foot of the Pasarni ghat, so hotel and school staff working up in Panchgani and Mahabaleshwar often rent in Wai, and move often.

Society and building rules
Very few homes in Wai come with a housing society. On the newer side, the handful of apartment blocks each have a secretary to inform of the date. In the old town the arrangement is with neighbours, since a wada may be shared by several families and the staircase and courtyard are common. If you are renting, fix the day with the owner, who often lives in the same lane, and hand the keys over in person.

Where the truck can stand
On the Panchgani and Surur roads and in most of Siddhanathwadi a 14 ft truck reaches the gate. The ghat lanes and the old peths are another matter, with stone steps and tight turns, so the truck stays at the nearest open road and everything is carried or shuttled in a tempo. The ghat steps are slippery after rain, and the crew takes heavy items down them slowly.

Traffic and timing
Wai's roads are quiet by most standards, but the Panchgani road fills with hill traffic on weekends and holidays, and the market streets are busy from late morning. Temple festivals on the ghats bring crowds into the old town, and the Bagad yatra at Bavdhan draws huge crowds at Rang Panchami, closing the village roads. A weekday morning is the best time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
The valley gets a fair monsoon, less than Mahabaleshwar just above it but enough to keep the roads wet for weeks in July and August. The Krishna rises when the Dhom dam releases water, and the ghats and the lowest lanes can go under. Stone steps and old floors turn slippery, so moves near the river slow down in the rain. The easiest months are November to March, cool and dry.

We are moving out of a wada with very old furniture. How is it packed?
Old wood is dry and its joints can be loose, so each piece is checked before it is dismantled, and some are safer moved whole. Everything is wrapped in bubble wrap, then corrugated sheet, and packed tight in the truck. A carved chest or a glass cabinet you care about is best crated in wood, which is charged on top of the quote.
