Shifting homes in Bhor
Until 1948 Bhor was the seat of a princely state, and its Rajwada, the palace of the Pant Sachiv rulers, still stands at the centre of town and is often used as a film set. Around it the old peths are wadas and houses built close together, with wooden stairs, courtyards and thick walls. The Nira runs past the town, and newer bungalows, row houses and a few apartment buildings have come up on the roads leading out.
Many families here have lived in the same house for generations, and those houses were built for another age. Rooms open off a central courtyard, the upper floor is reached by a steep wooden stair, and doorways are low enough to stop a modern wardrobe. At the survey we measure the doors and the stair, decide what gets dismantled and plan how the rest leaves the house. Bungalows and row houses on the roads out of town are quicker: a gate, a yard and a truck at the door.
Most of Bhor earns its living from government jobs, shops and farms. The tehsil office, the courts, the government hospital and the schools bring staff on transfer, and the irrigation department runs the Bhatghar dam upstream. The valley grows rice and vegetables, and weekend homes have spread along the backwaters. Many younger people commute to jobs along the Satara highway or have moved to the cities, and the old houses in town are often closed up when parents follow them.

Bhatghar is about 8 km away and villages up the valley 10 to 25 km, and those fit in a day too. Society and building rules
Bhor has few housing societies. For an independent house or a wada, fix the day with the owner, pay up the rent and power bill, and return the keys once the rooms are bare. Government quarters, including those at the Bhatghar dam colony, go back after an inspection on a date fixed by the department. The newer apartment buildings are small and want notice and dues cleared. For a weekend home, the caretaker should know the day and be there with the keys.

Where the truck can stand
The main roads through Bhor take a 14 ft truck, and newer homes on the edges have room to park. The old peths around the Rajwada do not: lanes are narrow and crowded, and the truck waits outside while a tempo shuttles. Along the river, a few houses sit below the road with steps down to them. Tracks to weekend homes at Bhatghar are steep in places, and on the Varandha road and in the fort villages the bends suit a smaller vehicle.

Traffic and timing
Bhor is quiet by town standards, busiest in the bazaar through the late morning. The roads out to the highway carry more traffic at weekends, when visitors come to the backwaters and the forts. In the monsoon, slips on the Varandha ghat can close it for days, which matters for any load heading to Mahad. The Ganesh festival and the temple yatras close the old peths to vehicles for an evening or two. A weekday morning is the easiest time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Bhor lies at the edge of the Sahyadri and gets far more rain than the country east of the highway, with the heaviest falls in July and August and the Varandha side soaked for weeks. Old houses take in damp, so wood, books and fabrics are packed with a moisture layer. The truck is loaded under cover, and hill tracks are left alone after heavy spells. Summers are mild for the district, rarely much above 35°C, and the cool, dry months from October to February are best.

Can you get furniture out of an old wada near the Rajwada?
Yes, with some planning. At the survey we measure the doorways and the stair and decide which pieces are taken apart. Carved cots and cupboards that do not open are wrapped in blankets and corrugated sheet and carried down by hand. A tempo comes into the lane and runs the goods to the truck. Any carpentry past routine dismantling is charged as a separate line.
Can a truck reach our weekend home at Bhatghar?
It depends on the track. Some homes near the backwaters are reached by steep, narrow tracks with no room to turn, and for those a pickup handles the final part, with the truck left on the backwater road. Send us a video of the approach, and the vehicle is chosen before the day.
We are moving to Mahad. Will you take the Varandha ghat?
In the dry months, if the road is open to trucks and the load suits the bends, yes. In the monsoon the ghat is often closed to heavy vehicles after landslips, and the load goes round by a longer road, which adds hours. The ghat's status is checked the day before, and the delivery time you are given allows for a detour.
Can we move in Bhor in the middle of the rains?
Inside the town, yes. Packing gets an extra plastic layer, a tarpaulin is rigged over the truck while it loads, and carrying pauses in a downpour. The hill tracks and the Varandha road are the difficulty. If your date is flexible, October to May is easier, and the cool months are the most comfortable.
