Shifting homes in Baramati
The largest town in the east of the district, Baramati has an old core and a newer, more orderly spread around it. The Kasba sits by the Karha river, with wadas, shops and temples on narrow lanes, while wide roads lead out to apartment buildings and hospitals along Bhigwan Road, bungalow colonies on the Indapur road, and the campus of Vidyanagari. Water from the Nira canal has made the villages around rich in cane and grapes, and it shows in the size of their houses.
Education and industry bring most newcomers. The Vidya Pratishthan campus, the old Tuljaram Chaturchand College, the government medical college and the engineering and agricultural institutes fill hostels and rented flats with students every June. The MIDC has plants run by Piaggio, Ferrero and Dynamix Dairy among others, and the Agricultural Development Trust at Malegaon runs research farms and a Krishi Vigyan Kendra. Engineers, lecturers, doctors and bank officers arrive on transfer and leave a few years later.
Housing follows the mix. Student moves are small and crowd into the last days of term: a cot, a desk, books and a cooler. Staff families in the newer buildings have a lift, a secretary and a 2 or 3 BHK to pack. The farming families of the villages around have the biggest households of all, with store rooms, heavy wooden furniture and often a second house in town. The Kasba to Vidyanagari is about 5 km and to the MIDC about 8, so a 2 BHK can leave one home in the morning and be unpacked in the next well before dark, and Malegaon, about 10 km out, is no different. What holds things up is the Kasba lanes, the hospital traffic on Bhigwan Road and, from November, the cane trucks around the sugar factory. A farming household with a full store room may need a second day to pack.

Apartment buildings in Baramati are run by small societies that want notice, a time for the lift and cleared maintenance. Tenants should have the owner's consent, since some secretaries check. Hostels and rented student rooms have fixed end dates and want the keys back and the room clean. College, hospital and government quarters are vacated through their own offices with an inspection. For MIDC company housing, security issues a pass naming the vehicle and the people on it.

Where the truck can stand
The newer parts of Baramati have wide roads and room to park, and a 17 ft truck reaches most buildings. The Kasba's lanes near the river are tight and busy, which leaves the tempo to shuttle while the truck stands outside. On Bhigwan Road, parking near the hospitals is tight during the day, and loading is done early. Farm addresses outside town are easy in dry weather, and the last stretch of a track may need a smaller vehicle after rain.

Traffic and timing
The town is busiest from mid morning on Bhigwan Road and around the market. In the crushing season, roughly November to April, cane tractors and trucks queue around Malegaon and the other factories. When the Tukaram palkhi halts in Baramati in June or July, the centre is given over to pilgrims for the day. The end of each term, in spring and again in December, brings a rush of student moves. An early weekday start suits most moves.

Weather and the months to plan around
Baramati is dry and hot. By April and May the afternoon temperature is often above 40°C, so the crew loads from early morning and keeps electronics and polished wood out of the sun. Rainfall is low and patchy, much of it in September, yet one heavy storm can put the low roads near the Karha under water for a few hours. Mild, dry winters make November to February the natural choice for a move.

I am a student leaving Vidyanagari. Can you move a hostel room?
