Ratnagiri is the district town, a port and the centre of the Alphonso trade. The older town sits on the slope between the sea and the plateau, with laterite houses under tiled roofs along lanes such as Tilak Ali, where Lokmanya Tilak was born, and around the Thiba Palace built for the exiled king of Burma. Newer Ratnagiri has spread up the plateau towards Nachane, Kuwarbav and the railway station, with apartment blocks, government quarters and bungalows on their own plots.
The slope is the first thing a crew notices. A house below the road in the old town may have a flight of laterite steps to its door, and a lane down towards Mandvi or Mirkarwada can be too steep for a loaded truck to wait on. Old houses keep teak cots, brass and copper vessels and wooden chests for grain and papers, and many have a loft reached by a ladder. In the plateau flats the move is simpler, with a lift in newer buildings and room to park.
People come for government and bank postings, the district hospital, Gogate Jogalekar College and the other colleges, and the industries around the town: Finolex at Ranpar, the Mirjole MIDC, the fishing harbour at Mirkarwada, and the port and power plant at Jaigad up the coast. The mango trade brings seasonal staff each spring. Its young people go in numbers to Mumbai and to jobs above the ghats, and a good many return with a household when they retire.

Society and building rules
Plateau societies expect the secretary to hear of the move in advance, the maintenance to be paid up and the loading done in daylight, and a few insist on a letter from the landlord, who is often in Mumbai, before a tenant's furniture goes. Government and bank quarters go back after the department's inspection, and the truck is loaded on the eve of that visit. A family house in the old town needs no permission, though several brothers may own it together, and it saves an argument on the day if the family has agreed which cupboards and rooms are being emptied.

Where the truck can stand
The main roads from Maruti Mandir to the station and along the Nachane side take a 17 ft truck, and the turn-off at Hathkhamba brings it in from NH 66. The lanes that drop towards Mandvi, Mirkarwada and Bhatye are narrow, steep and in places stepped, so a pickup or the crew's shoulders do the last stretch. Near the harbour, fish trucks and handcarts fill the lanes in the morning. In the rain the laterite paths get slippery, and heavy pieces go down on straps with extra hands.

Traffic and timing
The Alphonso season, from about March to May, fills the roads with mango trucks heading for Mumbai, and a truck for a household move has to be booked earlier than usual. Ganeshotsav is the other peak: in the days before Ganesh Chaturthi NH 66 is packed with chakarmani, the Konkan families who work in Mumbai, driving home, and immersions at Mandvi close the beach road in the evenings. Shimga brings village palkhis onto the roads in March. On an ordinary weekday, loading in the cool of the morning goes quickest.

Weather and the months to plan around
Ratnagiri gets one of the heaviest monsoons on the coast, from early June to late September, and July can bring days without a break in the rain. Laterite walls hold damp, so wooden furniture, books and leather are wrapped with a moisture layer and not left packed for weeks. The Amba ghat to Kolhapur and the Parshuram and Kashedi ghats to the north slow down in heavy rain. Summer is humid rather than scorching, around 33°C, and December to February is the easiest spell.

Yes. The survey counts the steps and measures the turns, and the crew is picked for carrying up and down stone steps. Cots and cupboards are opened in the rooms, and heavy pieces go down on straps with one person above and one below. A house like this takes longer than a plateau flat of the same size, and the written quote says so before you book.
Is the mango season a bad time to move in Ratnagiri?
It is a busy one. From March to May trucks are in demand for the Alphonso crop, mango loads leave for Mumbai most nights, and the packing sheds work late. A move is still possible, but book two or three weeks ahead and keep your date firm. If you can choose, December to February is quieter on the road and cooler for the crew.
