Shifting homes in Chiplun
Chiplun grew as a trading town where the Vashishti river meets the road down from the Kumbharli ghat, and its market still serves villages across the north of Ratnagiri district. The old town by the river, in Bazarpeth and Pethmap, is a close grid of shops with homes above them. Newer Chiplun has spread onto higher ground at Markandi, along the highway at Bahadur Shaikh Naka and out along the Karad road to Kherdi, with apartment blocks, row houses and bungalows.
The river decides a great deal. When heavy rain in the ghats meets a high tide and water released from the Koyna project's tailrace, the Vashishti backs up into the town, and in July 2021 more than half of Chiplun went under water. Some families in the low lanes have since moved to flats on higher ground, and others keep beds and cupboards upstairs through the monsoon. For a move that means ground floors with swollen wood and damp walls, and a date chosen with the river in mind.
Jobs come from the Kherdi industrial area, the chemical estate at Lote a short drive north, the Koyna project's power station at Pophali, the courts, hospitals and taluka offices, and colleges such as DBJ College. Traders' families make up much of the old town. Graduates head off to Mumbai or up the ghat for work, and the Kumbharli road keeps Karad and the rest of Satara district close for families with relatives there.

Chiplun is small, and most moves are within 6 or 7 km. Bazarpeth to Markandi is barely 2 km, and Kherdi or Bahadur Shaikh Naka lie only a little further out, so packing, loading and unloading a 2 BHK all happen between morning and dusk. The driving takes minutes. Most of the day is spent in the market lanes, where every carton is hand-carried to a waiting pickup, and in homes that have been flooded, where swollen joints make furniture slow to take apart. A move to Khed or out to Pophali also fits in a day.

Village houses and orchard plots on the road west towards Guhagar, reached by lanes that turn slippery in the rain. A pickup often does the last stretch.

Society and building rules
Societies at Markandi and on the higher ground want notice to the secretary, dues paid up and a daytime move, and some keep Sundays free of shifting. If your building checks with owners, ask the landlord for a written go-ahead, since many flats here belong to families living in Mumbai. The old town rarely has a society at all, so settle the date with the landlord, who usually lives on the ground floor below the flat. Quarters belonging to the power station or a company are returned through the employer's own inspection.

Where the truck can stand
A 17 ft truck manages the highway, the station road and the main streets of Markandi. Bazarpeth and Pethmap are another matter, narrow, lined with shop fronts and choked with handcarts from mid morning, so the big truck waits wherever the street opens up and a pickup shuttles. By the river some lanes take a single car and offer nowhere to turn. After a flood, silt left on the lower roads can make a heavy truck slide, and we check the road before sending one.

Traffic and timing
The market is busiest from about 10 am until evening, and the highway junctions back up with buses and trucks at the same time, so moves start early. Before Ganeshotsav the whole of NH 66 fills with families driving home from Mumbai, and heavy vehicles are usually restricted on the highway for some days, which can hold a truck. Shimga brings palkhi processions through the villages in March. The quietest days are weekdays in the dry season, outside the festival weeks.

Weather and the months to plan around
Chiplun sits low between the ghats and the sea and takes some of the heaviest rain on the coast. In a bad spell between late June and August the Vashishti can rise into the market within hours, and roads into town close. For a date in those weeks we follow the ghat rainfall and the river gauge and hold a fallback day. The Parshuram ghat just north of town has had landslides in recent monsoons. April and May are hot and humid, often in the high 30s, while the months from November to February are dry and comfortable.

Our ground floor in Pethmap was flooded. Can the furniture still be moved?
Usually, yes, but we look at it first. Wood that stood in water swells at the joints, and a wardrobe that was easy to open may crack if forced, so the survey notes which pieces come apart and which travel whole. Damp furniture is wrapped so it can breathe, and anything too damaged to survive the trip is pointed out before you pay for it to move.
Is it risky to plan a move in July?
It can be done, with a plan for bad days. In the run-up we follow the rain over the Sahyadri and the Vashishti's level, and a fallback date is agreed in case the market goes under. Loading from a flat on higher ground is rarely affected. If the goods are going over the Kumbharli or Parshuram ghat, the delivery window is set wider for landslips.
Is a move over the Kumbharli ghat to Karad a one-day job?
Yes. Karad is about 100 km east, and a house packed in the morning is normally standing in its new rooms by mid afternoon. The ghat has tight hairpins, so the truck is chosen for the bends, and in the monsoon it runs slower with mist on the upper stretch. I own a shop in Bazarpeth as well as the flat upstairs. Can both be moved together?
Yes. The shop stock, racks and counters are surveyed along with the home and quoted as a separate load, so each figure is clear.
