Shifting homes in Junnar
Few towns in the region are as old as Junnar. It was a trading centre on the Naneghat pass some two thousand years ago, as its Buddhist caves show, and Shivaji Maharaj was born in Shivneri fort above the town in 1630. The old town keeps that age in its lanes: peths and mohallas of wadas and stone houses, mosques and temples, and streets that bend and narrow. Newer homes, bungalows and a few apartment buildings have grown along the roads to Narayangaon and Otur.
The country around the town is some of the most productive in the district. Narayangaon, 13 km east, has a large tomato market, vineyards cover the valley, and the Kukadi project dams at Manikdoh, Yedgaon and Wadaj feed its canals. Farm families here live in big houses set back on tracks, full of heavy furniture and stored produce. Leopards live in the cane, and the forest department runs a rescue centre at Manikdoh, so farm moves are done in daylight.
The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope at Khodad, near Narayangaon, brings scientists, engineers and their families on postings, and the schools, colleges and taluka offices bring teachers and officials. Shiv Jayanti at Shivneri each February draws visitors from across the state. Young people leave for Mumbai and other cities, and many come back later to farm or to live in the family house.

What takes time is the old town's lanes and wada stairs, and farmhouses set back on tracks, where a pickup may take over for the final part. A large farm household with a store room full of produce is often packed over two days.

A market village north of Junnar, with houses and shops on its main street and farmhouses around it. Space for a truck on the main road.
Alephata
The junction of the Nashik highway and the Malshej road, busy with trucks at every hour. Homes here are loaded from side roads.
The vineyard belt
Farmhouses set back on tracks among the vineyards. Firm in dry months, soft in the rains, and always loaded in daylight.

Society and building rules
Junnar has few society offices. The house owner is the one who agrees the date and settles the rent and power bill with you. Government quarters and the observatory's staff housing are handed back through their own offices after an inspection, and the observatory gate may want the truck cleared in advance. Neighbours who share a wada lane appreciate a word the evening before, since the tempo will block it for a while. Farm families need nothing beyond a clear yard.

Where the truck can stand
Junnar's main roads carry a 14 or 17 ft truck comfortably, and newer homes have space at the gate. The old town's lanes are narrow and bend around old houses, so a tempo shuttles to the truck. Farmhouses often sit a few hundred metres off the road, and once rain has softened the track, a loaded truck is not sent down it. Near Narayangaon's market and at Alephata, trucks and buses fill the roads, and loading is done from a side road.

Traffic and timing
Shiv Jayanti on 19 February is the biggest day of the year. Visitors and official programmes fill Junnar and the Shivneri road, with traffic restricted for much of the day, so moves are kept away from it. The Ashtavinayak temples at Ozar and Lenyadri draw pilgrims on Sankashti Chaturthi and festival days. The tomato and grape seasons bring lorries onto Narayangaon's roads. Otherwise, a weekday morning start works well.

Weather and the months to plan around
Junnar sits in a valley at the edge of the Sahyadri, and the monsoon is heavy on the western side, towards Malshej and Naneghat, and moderate in town. Malshej ghat gets thick fog and landslips in July and August. Farm tracks go soft, and loads are lined with plastic and covered. Summer days climb into the mid 30s, and winter nights in the valley can be cold. Plan a move for October to February if you can, once the tracks have dried.

Will the truck go to Mumbai or Kalyan by the Malshej ghat?
In dry months, usually yes, since it is the shorter road. In the monsoon the ghat gets dense fog and landslips and has been closed after heavy rain in past years, so its condition is checked on the eve of the move, and the load may go round by the expressway, which adds hours. The delivery time we give you allows for it.
Can we move our farmhouse near Narayangaon in the evening, after the day's work?
We prefer to load in daylight. Farm tracks are hard to see at night, and leopards move through the cane after dark here, which makes a night move unsafe for a crew carrying things across the yard. We can start at first light instead and finish by evening.
Should we avoid Shiv Jayanti for a move in the old town?
Yes. On 19 February Junnar fills with visitors going up to Shivneri, and traffic in the town and on the fort road is restricted. A move elsewhere in the taluka is less affected, but anything near the old town or the fort is easier a few days either side.
Our old wada's furniture will not fit through the doors of our new flat. What can you do?
Anything built to come apart, such as cots, cupboards and dining tables, is opened up here and put back together in the flat. For pieces that do not open, we measure the new doors and the lift before the day, so nothing arrives that cannot go in. Carpentry beyond standard dismantling is quoted separately.
