Until the colleges and factories came, Ambi was a farming village in Maval taluka. Now the D Y Patil engineering college campus on the MIDC road brings students from across the state, who fill hostels, paying guest rooms and shared flats. The Talegaon industrial area stretches out beyond the village, and apartment buildings of two to five storeys have gone up for students and plant staff among the older houses and fields.
Most moves out of Ambi are small. A student leaving at the end of the course has a mattress, a study table, a cooler, books and a few cartons, and perhaps a bike. A plant trainee has much the same. Families in the newer buildings have more, and the farming households of the old village the most, with heavy cupboards and store rooms. Buildings are low and often without lifts, so the crew carries up and down stairs, some of them on the outside wall.
Ambi is often confused with Aamby Valley City, the township above Lonavala, which is a different place about 60 km away. People come here to study and to work in the plants of the Talegaon MIDC, and they leave when the course ends, a contract finishes or a better job turns up, usually for Hinjewadi, Chakan, Mumbai or home. Families from the village mostly stay close, moving to Talegaon Dabhade or Vadgaon Maval.

Society and building rules
Hostels have a checkout: the warden inspects the room, collects the keys and signs a clearance that is often needed before your deposit comes back, so book the move for after that. PG and flat owners want rent and electricity settled and the room cleaned. The few society buildings ask for notice and cleared maintenance. Company flats go back to HR or admin, who check the furniture they supplied. In each case, tell the building a day ahead so the truck is let in.

Where the truck can stand
Roads around Ambi are generally good, and a 14 ft truck reaches the newer buildings and the campus area. The old village lanes are narrow, so a tempo is used there. The MIDC road has no room to stop, and trucks load from a side lane or a building's own space. Some new buildings stand on roads that are not yet paved, and in the monsoon these turn to mud, so a smaller vehicle may be sent.

Traffic and timing
Term ends set the busiest weeks in Ambi, usually in May and June and again in December, when students leave together and small vehicles are booked up. Every shift change backs up the MIDC road with company buses. The Chakan road is slow with container trucks at all hours, which matters for any move in that direction. A weekday, starting once the first shift has gone in, is the easiest time.

Weather and the months to plan around
July and August bring long wet spells to Ambi, as to the rest of Maval, and roads beside new buildings that are not yet paved turn to mud. Students leaving in June often run into the first heavy rain, so their cartons get plastic linings and a sheet covers the truck's tail. April is warm, around 36°C, and winter mornings are cool and misty. A move in the dry season between November and February is the least bother.

Is Ambi the same place as Aamby Valley?
No. Ambi is the village beside Talegaon Dabhade in Maval taluka, with the engineering college and the MIDC road. Aamby Valley City is a private township in the hills beyond Lonavala, about 60 km away. The names sound alike, so quote the pin code when booking and we will check it is the right place.
Can you move a hostel room after my final exams?
Yes. Book the day after your hostel checkout, so the clearance is signed before we load. A mattress, a table, a cooler, books and cartons go in a small vehicle with two people. For a long move home, ask whether a part load is possible that week, which costs less, though it depends on other bookings and cannot be promised.
I am a trainee at a Talegaon MIDC plant. Can I move with just a few things?
Yes. A bed, a cupboard and some cartons need only a small vehicle, and at this distance the move takes a morning. Company housing will have gate rules for the truck and crew, so pass those on when you book. If you are leaving the area, the motorbike travels apart from the goods on a carrier.
The road to our new building is still unpaved. Will the truck get there in the rains?
In dry weather, usually. After heavy rain an unpaved approach can trap a loaded truck, so it is parked on the nearest paved stretch and a pickup, or the crew on foot, covers the rest. A photo or a short video of the road the day before lets us pick the right vehicle.
