Kurnool was briefly the capital of Andhra State in the 1950s, and the camps that housed offices and staff then still name parts of the city: A Camp, B Camp and C Camp, now settled neighbourhoods of government quarters, houses and schools. The old town stands near the Konda Reddy Buruju and the meeting of the Tungabhadra and the Handri, with markets and close-set homes. Newer colonies have grown along the national highway, the Nandyal road and the Bellary road.
The rivers are Kurnool's risk as well as its water. In October 2009 the Tungabhadra, swollen by rain across the region, flooded much of the city, and families in the low colonies near the river remember it well. For most of the year, though, Kurnool is dry, dusty in summer and low on humidity. Wood and upholstery survive the climate well, and packing here guards against dust more than damp.
The city is the gateway to Rayalaseema. Kurnool Medical College and its general hospital, Rayalaseema University and IIITDM bring doctors, teachers and students, and the district offices bring transfers. Industry is growing at Orvakal near the airport, and the limestone slab trade works around Betamcherla. Kurnool sits on the Hyderabad to Bangalore highway, and people who leave mostly go to one of those two cities.

Society and building rules
Kurnool has few large apartment societies. Those on the Nandyal road and near the highway expect the secretary to be told, dues cleared and the lift used in the daytime. In independent houses the landlord is the only permission you need: settle the rent and the electricity reading, and return the keys. Government quarters in the camps and hospital housing go back after an inspection by the department, and we pack and load the day before.

Where the truck can stand
Kurnool is kind to trucks, with flat ground, wide roads in the camps and colonies, and room outside the gate. The old quarter by the Buruju and the markets is the exception, with narrow, crowded streets where a truck cannot turn, so a tempo takes over. On NH 44 through the city, loading from the carriageway is not safe, and we use a service road or a side street. After heavy rain, some riverside roads hold water.

Traffic and timing
Traffic is heaviest in the old town markets from mid morning and at the highway junctions at office hours. Pilgrims heading for Srisailam and Mantralayam pass through the city, and around Maha Shivaratri and the Aradhana at Mantralayam the highways fill with buses. Ganesh Chaturthi immersions close central roads for an evening. In summer the crew works from dawn until about 11 am and again in the evening.

Weather and the months to plan around
Summer in Kurnool is among the harshest in Andhra Pradesh. April and May afternoons reach 42°C to 45°C, with hot winds and dust, so every carton is sealed and sofas are wrapped before they go out. The monsoon is light and irregular, with most of the rain in August and September, but a heavy spell upstream can raise the Tungabhadra quickly. Dry, pleasant weather from November through February makes that the time to choose.

Our house is in a riverside colony that flooded in 2009. Should we worry about a monsoon move?
It is worth planning for. We check the river levels and the rain upstream in the days before the move, and if the Tungabhadra is rising we suggest a new date. Everything is wrapped with a plastic layer in the rainy months, and the truck waits on higher ground if the approach is wet.
