Mahbubnagar, still called Palamuru by many who live there, is a district town of independent houses. The old town around the Clock Tower and the main market has homes and shops packed close, while New Town, Padmavathi Colony and the colonies towards Yenugonda are laid out with plots, compound walls and roads wide enough for a truck. Apartment blocks are few and mostly new. The Pillalamarri banyan, a single tree spread over acres just outside town, is its best-known landmark.
For generations the district sent its labour out across India, and Palamuru workers are found on building sites from Hyderabad to Mumbai. That is slowly changing as irrigation reaches more farmland and industry arrives nearby. The pharma units of the Polepally SEZ and the Jadcherla industrial area, 20 km away on the national highway, now employ chemists, engineers and shift workers, and many of them rent in Mahbubnagar or Jadcherla.
Government offices, Palamuru University, the government medical college and the SVS hospital at Yenugonda bring staff on transfer and students on fixed courses. Hyderabad is close enough, at about 100 km, that some families keep a home in each city and shift furniture between them as jobs change. A move here is usually uncomplicated: a gate, one staircase, and a household that fits a 14 ft truck.

Mahbubnagar is a small town. New Town to Yenugonda is about 5 km and the Clock Tower to Padmavathi Colony less than that, so the truck is usually empty again at the new house by early afternoon. Jadcherla is about 20 km away and makes no difference to the timing. Society and building rules
Most homes here are independent houses, so there is no association to apply to. The landlord, often living on the ground floor, wants the rent settled, the meter reading noted and the keys back. The handful of apartment blocks, mostly in New Town and on the Hyderabad road, ask for notice to the secretary and a daytime move. Government quarters and hospital accommodation go back only once an inspector has seen them, which sets our loading day.

Where the truck can stand
The colonies are easy, with broad roads and space outside most gates. The old town around the Clock Tower is the exception, with narrow streets and shops open until late, so the truck is left at the wider end of the market road and a tempo shuttles. A few newer layouts at the edge of town still have unpaved roads, fine in the dry months and soft after a heavy shower. At Jadcherla the truck loads from a service road, off the highway.

Traffic and timing
Traffic in Mahbubnagar is light for most of the day, heavier around the bus stand, the Clock Tower and the railway station at school and office hours. The market is busiest on festival days and through the wedding season. For a load going to Hyderabad, the city's limits on goods vehicles and the new building's shifting hours matter more than anything local, and departure is timed to both. Summer moves start at 6 am.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mahbubnagar is dry, on the southern Telangana plateau. From March to May the afternoons pass 40°C, sometimes 43°C, with dust in the wind, so cartons are taped tight and upholstery covered before it leaves the house. The monsoon is short and fairly light, falling mostly between July and September, and a heavy storm can make unpaved layouts muddy for a day. The cool, dry months, November through February, are the best time to move here.
