Shifting homes in Kalyan
Kalyan is an old port and market town on the Ulhas creek, watched over by Durgadi fort, and one of the busiest junctions on the Central Railway, where the line splits for Kasara and Karjat. The west side holds the old town: Bazarpeth, Shivaji Chowk and the lanes around the station, with the APMC market further out. Beyond it, Khadakpada, Godrej Hill and Birla College Road have filled with towers. Kalyan East, across the tracks, is newer and denser, with four and five storey buildings and chawls packed close.
That split shapes every move. There are only a few road crossings over the railway, and a truck going from one side to the other can queue at them for half an hour. The old town's buildings are low and close together, with steep stairs and no lifts, while the towers in the west have service lifts and gates that want paperwork. In the east many older buildings have no lift, and the lanes around Kolsewadi and off the Malang Road are too tight for a big truck.
The railway is a big employer here, with a large yard, an electric loco shed and staff colonies, and transfers in and out of Kalyan follow its postings. Commuters make up the rest: families who work in Thane and Mumbai and chose Kalyan for the space and the fast trains. Traders at the APMC market and the old town shops, and people from the Konkan and north Maharashtra who settled here, move within the city and out to Nashik and Ahilyanagar.

Khadakpada to Kolsewadi is only about 7 km, but the crossing over the tracks can be the slowest part of the day. Within one side of the city a 2 BHK is a same-day job with time to spare, and a cross-railway move still fits in a day if the truck avoids the evening queues. Moves out to Dombivli, Ulhasnagar or Ambernath are just as short, and some are simpler, since the roads there are less crowded than Kalyan's old town.

Older homes near the fort and the bridge to Bhiwandi. Navratri at the Durgadi temple fills these roads for nine nights, so a move here avoids that week.
Kolsewadi and Tisgaon
Kalyan East's dense core, with walk-up buildings and chawls on narrow roads. A smaller truck and extra hands for the stairs are the usual plan.
Chinchpada and the Malang Road

Society and building rules
The towers of Kalyan West run like big complexes anywhere: a note to the society office, the lift booked, maintenance cleared before the gate pass, and a set window for shifting. Older buildings in the old town and Kalyan East are small cooperative societies where a word with the secretary is usually enough. For railway quarters, the handover follows the department's own procedure, so tell us the date you must vacate. If you rent, ask your landlord for a short letter in case the society wants one.

Where the truck can stand
Around the station, Shivaji Chowk and Bazarpeth, a truck cannot stand from mid-morning on, so we either load at first light or run a tempo between your door and the truck on a wider road. The Kalyan West towers have room inside the gate. In Kalyan East, parked vehicles and handcarts narrow many lanes to the width of one car, so we send nothing longer than 14 ft.

Traffic and timing
Shivaji Chowk, the Durgadi bridge and the roads around the station are jammed from late morning to late evening, and the crossings between east and west queue at office hours. Loading at 7 or 8 am and leaving before 11 am makes the day easier. Navratri at Durgadi and Ganeshotsav bring their own crowds, and the APMC market road is heavy with produce trucks early in the morning.

Weather and the months to plan around
Kalyan's monsoon, June to September, is a heavy one, and the Ulhas creek and the Waldhuni, which runs through Kalyan East, both rise after a hard spell. Low roads near the creek and in parts of the east take water for a few hours, and the Kalyan-Shil Road turns rough. It is humid for much of the year. Winters are dry and comfortable, so November to February is the best time, and April and May bring afternoons near 40°C.

Yes. It is about 180 km, and the goods normally arrive that evening or early next day. The Malshej Ghat is steep and prone to landslides and closures in the monsoon, so between June and September we may send the truck the longer way round and allow extra time.
