Jabalpur is a city of quarters. The cantonment around Sadar holds the Grenadiers and Signals training centres, the military hospital and the Madhya Bharat Area headquarters, and the four defence factories, the Vehicle Factory, the Gun Carriage Factory, the Grey Iron Foundry and the Ordnance Factory at Khamaria, each keep a housing estate of their own. The West Central Railway runs its zone from here, and the principal seat of the Madhya Pradesh High Court is in Jabalpur, so railway, legal and government transfers add to the army's.
The housing follows that pattern. The estates and the cantonment have wide roads and blocks of quarters, where access is easy and the paperwork is not. Napier Town, Wright Town and Civil Lines are the old civilian colonies, with bungalows and houses on large plots. The bazaars around Bada Fuhara, Kamania Gate and the Sarafa are close-packed and busy. Newer houses and apartment blocks have spread along the roads to Gwarighat, Tilhari and Vijay Nagar. Granite outcrops break up the city, so some colonies climb, and a house on a rise can mean a carry up from the road.
Outside the forces, Jabalpur draws students to the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College, Jabalpur Engineering College, IIITDM and the agricultural university at Adhartal. The head offices of the state power companies, the district and divisional offices and a large wholesale trade keep the rest of the city working. Sadar and the cantonment
Army lines, bungalows and married quarters. The gate wants the crew list and truck number in advance, and the vehicle parks where the staff direct it.
Khamaria, Ranjhi and the factory estates

Napier Town and Wright Town

Most moves here involve an office more than a society. Cantonment and estate quarters are released only after an inspection, meter readings and a settlement of any damage, and the vehicle and crew need a pass to enter. Railway quarters follow the division's own vacating process. In Napier Town and Wright Town, an independent house needs only the landlord's agreement and the last electricity reading. Apartment blocks in the newer colonies ask for the secretary to be told and the maintenance cleared, and some keep moves to daylight hours.

Where the truck can stand
Inside the estates and the cantonment, broad roads let a 17 ft truck pull up at the quarter once the gate has cleared it. Around Bada Fuhara, Kamania Gate and the Sarafa the lanes are tight and full of rickshaws, and the truck has to wait at a wider junction while a pickup shuttles. Some colonies sit on the rocky slopes around Madan Mahal, where the road rises steeply to the last few houses and the crew carries from the point where the truck can safely stop.

Traffic and timing
Navratri and Dussehra are the busiest days of Jabalpur's year. Durga pandals go up in nearly every neighbourhood, and the immersion processions close the central roads through the night. Narmada Jayanti fills the roads to Gwarighat. On ordinary days the jams build at Madan Mahal, Damoh Naka, Teen Patti and the station approach as schools and offices open and close. Goods trucks face daytime limits on Jabalpur's roads too, and an intercity load tends to leave at night.

Weather and the months to plan around
Jabalpur's summer is fierce, with May afternoons near 44°C and hot, dry winds, and our loading begins at sunrise. The monsoon brings heavy rain from mid June to September, the Narmada and the city's nallahs rise after big spells, and low roads take water. Wooden furniture and mattresses get a plastic layer in that season. December and January are properly cold, with mornings near 5°C and some fog on the highways.
