Bhandara is a district town on the Wainganga, where the highway from Nagpur to Raipur crosses the river. The district is called the land of lakes for its many old tanks, and paddy fields come right up to the edge of town. Houses are mostly independent, with courtyards in the older parts and newer bungalows and small apartment buildings along the highway and the Tumsar road.
Jobs come from a few large employers. Society and building rules
Bhandara has almost no managed housing societies. The rules come from employers: the ordnance factory estate, the Sunflag and Ashok Leyland colonies, MOIL housing and government quarters each want an inspection, a meter reading and a no-dues note before the keys go back, and some want vehicle details for the gate. In a rented house the owner needs the date and the last bills settled.

Where the truck can stand
Most colonies and the highway strip have space for a 14 or 17 ft truck to stand. The old town lanes near the market and the river are narrow, so the truck stays on the main road. On the highway itself trucks pass fast and constantly, so loading happens from a service lane or inside the gate. Village addresses in the paddy belt sit on raised, narrow roads between fields, where a small vehicle is safer.

Traffic and timing
Bhandara traffic is light except on the highway and the market roads, and the bridge over the Wainganga slows everything at busy hours. Ganesh and Durga festival processions pass through the old town. During the paddy harvest in October and November, tractors and rice trucks fill the district roads. Heavy monsoon days are worth leaving flexible, since the rain can close low roads for a day.

Weather and the months to plan around
Bhandara is hot in May, often near 45°C, and humid again once the monsoon arrives. Rain is heavier here than in western Vidarbha, and in a bad year the Wainganga has risen into low-lying wards of the town, so moves in July to September are planned with a margin. Humid weeks are hard on wooden furniture and upholstery, which get an extra plastic layer. November to February is best.
