Shifting homes in Sagar
Sagar is built around its lake, the Lakha Banjara, with the old town packed along its banks. Katra Bazaar and the lanes around it are shops below and homes above, reached by narrow stairs. Civil Lines and the cantonment are the older planned areas, with bungalows and army lines under big trees. Newer growth has spread to Makronia, Tili and the colonies along the main roads out of town, mostly independent houses with a few apartment blocks, and the university sits apart on the Pathariya hills.
Sagar's homes are mostly houses of a storey or two with a terrace on top, so a move here turns on furniture and stairs more than on permissions. Old town houses have steep inside stairs and upper rooms full of stored things. University quarters on the hill are reached by a winding road, and the campus has its own rules for entry. Army and police quarters come with inspections and fixed dates. In the colonies there is parking at the door and nothing to wait for.
The university, a central university since 2009, is Sagar's best known institution, and faculty, staff and students arrive and leave with the academic year. Society and building rules
Sagar has few housing societies. A tenant usually needs only the landlord's nod, the last month's rent paid and a meter reading. University quarters are vacated through the estate section, which inspects them before taking the keys, and hostels set a date by which rooms must be clear. Army quarters need the vehicle and crew cleared at the cantonment gate and a handover inspection. The police academy and government offices have their own procedures, and we set the loading day to fall just ahead of each handover.

Where the truck can stand
Civil Lines, Makronia, Tili and the newer colonies take a 17 ft truck to almost every door. The old town around Katra Bazaar and the lake is the exception, with narrow lanes, steep stairs and no room to stop once trade begins, so a pickup ferries goods out to the truck on the nearest broad road. The road up to the university climbs and bends, and a loaded truck crawls up it in low gear. Inside the cantonment the truck parks where it is told.

Traffic and timing
Sagar's traffic is modest and bunches around Katra Bazaar, the bus stand and the railway station in the late morning and evening. The university sets the busy weeks: May and June, when students and short-term staff leave, and July, when the new session brings them back. Navratri and the Ganesh festival bring processions through the old town, and the lake road fills on festival evenings. Outside those weeks, a weekday morning is the easy slot.

Weather and the months to plan around
Sagar sits on the Vindhyan plateau and gets a hot, dry summer, with May afternoons around 43°C. From mid June to September the rain is heavy for this part of the state: the lake rises, low roads in the old town collect water and unpaved lanes in the new colonies turn soft. Winters are cool and dry, with chilly mornings in December and January. From October to February a move here is easiest.

We start with the estate section's inspection date and pack the day before it, so the quarter is empty when the staff arrive. Can you shift a house in the lanes around Katra Bazaar?
Yes. A truck cannot stand in those lanes once trade begins, so a pickup comes early and makes the runs out to where the truck is parked. Furniture is opened up inside where it allows, and heavy pieces are carried down by hand. Before quoting, we ask you to show us the stairs and the lane on your phone.
