Shifting homes in Satna
Satna is a cement town. The limestone around it feeds several large plants on the edges of the city and further out towards Maihar, and those works, with the railway junction, made Satna the trading centre of the Vindhya region. The town has an old core around the station and the bazaar, a Civil Lines of offices and bungalows, and newer colonies along the Rewa, Panna and Maihar roads. Each cement plant keeps a staff colony of its own, laid out in rows of quarters around a market and a school.
For a move, Satna has the usual mix of a district town. Houses in the colonies are one or two storeys, with a gate, a terrace and heavy wooden furniture. The bazaar near the station is narrow and busy, and homes above the shops there are reached by steep stairs. Plant colonies are orderly and roomy, but a quarter goes back to the company after an inspection and a pass is needed at the gate. Close to the works and quarries, a fine grey dust coats whatever is left uncovered, which is why cartons are sealed tight and sofas stay wrapped until they are indoors.
The cement companies bring engineers, managers and technicians on transfer, and the railway brings its own staff. Government offices, the district courts and the colleges add more. Many families from Satna and neighbouring Rewa have relatives working in Mumbai, Delhi and Gujarat, so moves out of town often go a long way. Pilgrims pass through for Maihar and Chitrakoot, and on festival days the traffic to both affects the roads out of the city.

Distances in Satna are small. The station to the Rewa Road colonies is about 5 km, and a plant colony on the edge of town is 10 to 15 km out, so even a full family home is done within a day. The slow parts are the bazaar near the station, where the carry is long, and the junctions around the station at busy hours. A quarter in a plant colony takes longer to clear than to drive, because the handover keeps its own timetable.

Most homes in Satna are independent houses, and the owner is the one to agree dates and settle the last bills with. In the newer apartment blocks, a written note goes to the secretary and the maintenance is cleared. Cement plant quarters are handed back through the company's township office after an inspection, and railway quarters through the division. Both want our truck number and crew names before the gate will open. The loading day is set so the quarter is empty and clean before the inspector arrives.

Where the truck can stand
A 14 or 17 ft truck gets to most doors in Civil Lines, the colonies and the plant townships. Around Station Road, Sindhi Camp and the old bazaar the lanes are too tight and busy for it, and a pickup does the shuttling out to the main road. On the highways towards Rewa and Maihar, where cement trucks run all day, loading is done from a side road or the colony gate, never the highway shoulder.

Traffic and timing
Navratri draws very large crowds to the Sharda Devi temple at Maihar, and the Maihar road is jammed for those nine days. Diwali brings the Deepdaan pilgrims to Chitrakoot, which slows the road there. In town, the bazaar stays crowded from late morning until the evening, and cement trucks fill the highways around the clock. A weekday morning start suits a local move, and a long-distance load leaves once it is packed and checked.

Weather and the months to plan around
Satna's summer is severe, with hot winds and afternoons past 44°C through May and early June, so electronics and polished furniture stay in the shade until the last moment. Rain from late June to September is heavy, and roads near the plants turn slick with wet dust. Winter nights drop close to 5°C, with fog on the highways in the early morning. October, November and February make the easiest moving months in Satna.

I live in a cement company colony near Satna. What do you need for the move?
The date the township office will inspect your quarter, plus a few days' notice so the gate pass can be made out for our crew and truck. We pack before the inspection and leave the quarter empty. Will the dust near the plants get into our things?
It will if cartons are left open, so each one is taped the moment it is full. Sofas, mattresses and the television get stretch film and an outer cover that stays on until they are inside the new home. On a windy day we keep the truck doors closed between loads, which is the best protection against the dust.
Can I move during Navratri?
Inside Satna, yes, with an early start. The problem is the Maihar road, which is jammed with pilgrims for the nine days, so a move to or from Maihar or a plant colony on that side is better done on another date. Tell us both addresses and we will check the route.
We are moving to Mumbai. How does the load travel?
Mumbai is about 1,200 km away, so it is a long-distance move of a few days. The household is packed and loaded in Satna and given a consignment number, so you can follow its progress. At the Mumbai end, societies set shifting hours and the city restricts goods vehicles, so the unloading is timed to both. Any car or bike goes by carrier and reaches Mumbai by itself.
