Flat, hot and well watered, Indapur taluka fills the district's south-eastern corner between the Bhima and the Nira, and irrigation has turned it into cane fields and orchards. The town sits on the Solapur highway, with an old centre of wadas, shops and temples and newer colonies of bungalows and row houses spreading along the highway and the Baramati road. North of the town, the backwaters of the Ujani dam reach up towards Bhigwan.
Sugar shapes life here. Cooperative factories crush cane from October or November into spring, and their staff colonies, offices and schools form small towns of their own. Farming families live in large houses with store rooms, cattle sheds and tractors in the yard, and their moves are big: heavy cots and cupboards, grain drums and a house that has filled up over thirty years. Moves are easiest before or after the crushing season, when the family has time and the roads are free of cane traffic.
Bhigwan, about 30 km up the highway, is known for the flamingos that winter on the Ujani backwaters and for its fish restaurants, and the villages along the water have fishing families and farmhouses. Teachers, bank officers and government staff transfer in and out of Indapur's taluka offices and colleges. Young people leave for jobs in bigger cities, and many who left years ago come back to build on family land.

Society and building rules
Indapur has few housing societies. A tenant squares up with the owner directly, paying the final month's rent and the power bill and collecting the deposit. The small apartment buildings on the highway want notice and cleared dues. Quarters belonging to a sugar factory, a bank or the government are returned through that employer's own office, which inspects them first, so loading is set for the previous day. Farm families need no permission at all, though it helps to park the tractors and implements out of the way on the day.

Where the truck can stand
Indapur is flat and open, and a truck reaches most homes easily. The old town lanes are the exception, where a tempo brings things out to the truck on the highway side. The Solapur highway is a fast divided road where no truck can stand, so a home along it is loaded from the service lane. A farm track that bears a truck in March can swallow its wheels in September, so after rain a loaded truck stays on the tar.

Traffic and timing
The Tukaram palkhi comes through Indapur each June or July on the road to Pandharpur, halting in town and drawing crowds from across the taluka, and roads are closed or diverted while it passes. Through the crushing months, lines of cane tractors wait outside each sugar factory gate. Weekend highway traffic is heavy with people heading for Solapur and Pandharpur. A weekday start at 7 am, finished before the afternoon heat, suits most moves.

Weather and the months to plan around
Few parts of the district are as hot and dry as Indapur. From March to May afternoons pass 40°C, so the crew starts at dawn, shades the televisions and polished wood, and aims to shut the truck before noon. Rain is light and uneven, much of it in September, and short storms can briefly flood low roads. The Ujani backwaters shrink in summer and fill again after the monsoon. Given a free hand, aim for the dry, pleasant stretch between November and February.

We have a big farmhouse near Bhigwan with a store room and sheds. How do you plan it?
We start with a walk through every room, the loft and the sheds, in person or on video, and the truck size is decided from that. Steel cupboards are emptied before wrapping, grain drums get sealed lids, and bolted cots are opened up. Farm tools go as a separately listed load. A house like that is often packed over a day and moved the next morning.
Can we still move in May, with the heat?
Yes, provided the day is shifted to the cooler hours. Packing begins at 6 am, electronics and polished furniture go in last so they spend the least time in a closed truck, and the doors are shut before the sun is high. Water and shade breaks are built in. If your date is flexible, the cool months after Diwali are much easier.
