Haldwani has grown from a market town into the largest city in Kumaon. The old centre around Mangal Parao, Bhotia Parao and Patel Chowk, whose names recall the halting places of the old hill trade, is still a dense tangle of shops, godowns and houses above them. Around it, colonies of two and three storey houses have spread in every direction: Mukhani, Heera Nagar and Kusumkhera, the Kathgodam side and Gaulapar across the river. Apartment blocks are newer and still few, mostly on Rampur Road and near the Kaladhungi Road.
Many of these houses belong to families who came down from Almora, Pithoragarh, Bageshwar and the Nainital hills for schools, hospitals and easier winters, and many of them are ex-servicemen. Their homes are well stocked: heavy beds, tin trunks of woollens, copper and brass from the village, and often a floor let to a tenant. Packing takes longer than the drive. Kathgodam, at the foot of the hills, is where the plains road ends, and a move going on to Nainital or Bhimtal changes to a smaller vehicle there.
Work in Haldwani is mostly in trade, health and government. The Government Medical College and Sushila Tiwari Hospital, the MB Government PG College and the Uttarakhand Open University bring doctors, teachers and students, and the wholesale markets supply much of the Kumaon hills. The SIDCUL estates at Pantnagar and Sitarganj, within an hour's drive, add engineers who prefer to live here. Young people leave for jobs in Delhi NCR and Dehradun, and transfers take officers across the state.

Mangal Parao and Patel Chowk
The old market, packed with shops, handcarts and delivery vans from morning to night. A pickup comes in at dawn and the crew walks goods out to the truck parked on Nainital Road.
Mukhani and Kaladhungi Road
Settled colonies of independent houses on the west side, where a 17 ft truck can pull up outside nearly every gate and traffic builds only at school hours.
Heera Nagar and Kusumkhera
Neighbourhoods of two and three storey houses, many with a tenant floor. Inner lanes narrow towards the end, and a 14 ft truck is the safer choice.
Kathgodam
The railhead at the foot of the hills, with houses along the Nainital road and railway quarters. Loads bound for Bhimtal or Nainital change to a smaller vehicle here.
Gaulapar
Newer colonies across the Gaula river, with open roads and some unpaved cross streets that turn to mud in the monsoon.
Rampur Road and the medical college

Society and building rules
Nearly everyone in Haldwani lives in an independent house, so the formalities are between tenant and owner. Owners often live on the ground floor, and they will expect the final rent, the power bill and a look round the rooms before the deposit is returned. The handful of apartment societies on Rampur Road and near Kaladhungi Road want notice, dues cleared and a daytime slot. Railway quarters at Kathgodam and government housing follow their own vacating date, and hospital and college hostels close rooms at the end of the session.

Where the truck can stand
Outside the market, Haldwani is an easy town for a truck. Most colonies have roads wide enough to park at the gate, and Kaladhungi Road, Rampur Road and Nainital Road carry heavy traffic without trouble. The problem streets are the lanes around Mangal Parao, Bhotia Parao and Patel Chowk, where shops spill onto the road, and the narrowing inner lanes of some older colonies. For the hill road beyond Kathgodam a loaded large truck is the wrong vehicle, and a pickup or small truck does the climb.

Traffic and timing
Nainital Road is the slow one. Every weekend and through the May and June holidays, and again at Christmas and New Year, tourist cars bound for Nainital and Bhimtal queue from Tikonia to Kathgodam. The market fills from about 10 am, and school traffic crowds the colony roads at opening and closing time. Big trucks are unwelcome in the centre at the busiest hours. A weekday morning away from the holiday rush is the easiest time to load.

Weather and the months to plan around
Haldwani sits in the Bhabar at the foot of the hills, and its summer is as fierce as the plains, around 40°C on May and June afternoons. The monsoon is heavy from July to September: the Gaula swells, water stands on the roads of low colonies after a downpour, and the hill road beyond Kathgodam can close for a landslide. Wood and upholstery are wrapped against damp. Winter brings cold nights and dense morning fog in December and January. Plan for October to November, or February to March, if the date is yours to choose.

Can you move our household up to Nainital or Bhimtal?
Yes, as a separate leg. A loaded large truck is not the right vehicle for the hill road, so the goods go up in a pickup or small truck, sometimes in two trips, and anything beyond the end of the road goes up on shoulders. The hill road is slow in the tourist season and can close after heavy rain, so that leg gets its own time window in the quote.
My parents' house in Heera Nagar has a store room and a terrace full of things. How long will packing take?
Usually a full day, sometimes a day and a half. Trunks, brass and copper, bedding and woollens all need sorting, and we go through the store room and terrace at the survey so the truck size and crew are right. If things are going to two different addresses, each lot is packed and labelled on its own.
