Rudrapur is the headquarters of Udham Singh Nagar district, built on flat terai farmland and growing quickly. For decades it was a farm town settled by Punjabi and Bengali families after Partition, with a busy bazaar and houses on big plots, and the locality called Transit Camp still carries that history in its name. Then SIDCUL's Pantnagar estate brought Tata Motors, Bajaj Auto, Ashok Leyland and a long list of supplier units, and the town filled with workers' rented rooms, engineers' flats and new colonies on the Kichha and Kashipur roads.
That history shows in the housing. Awas Vikas and the older colonies are independent houses with a gate and a room or two let out, Transit Camp is dense and busy, and the newer apartment projects and company guest houses sit closer to the estate. Many engineers here are on a posting of a few years, so their moves are small: a furnished flat, a bike and a few cartons. Families in the colonies own far more, and a farmhouse on the edge of town can fill the largest truck.
The GB Pant University of Agriculture and Technology at Pantnagar, the country's first agricultural university, has a large campus of faculty houses and hostels just outside town, and its staff and students add another stream of moves. Transfers in the auto and consumer goods plants keep people coming and going all year, often to their companies' other plants in Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu or Haryana. Where the truck can stand
A truck has an easy time in most of Rudrapur. The estate roads were built for container trucks, and Awas Vikas and the newer colonies have wide, straight streets with room at the gate. The difficult bits are Transit Camp and the lanes behind the bazaar, where goods travel to the truck by pickup, and the highway frontage, where the truck uses a service lane or side road. After heavy rain, unpaved roads in newer colonies can turn soft, and we check the approach before sending a full-size vehicle.

Traffic in Rudrapur rises and falls with the factory shifts. When a shift changes, the roads to SIDCUL fill with buses, bikes and staff vehicles, and the Kichha Road and Kashipur Road junctions back up. The bazaar gets going around 11 am and stays crowded until dark, and the highway through town carries heavy goods traffic day and night. A move started early on a weekday, away from shift change, usually finds clear roads.

Weather and the months to plan around
Rudrapur is in the terai, so it is hot and humid for much of the year. May and June afternoons reach about 40°C, and the monsoon from July to September brings heavy rain, waterlogged low roads and a damp that gets into wood, mattresses and cartons. Packing carries a plastic layer under the wrap in those months. December and January are cold, and dense fog can hang over the highways until late morning. Of the whole year, October, November, February and March give the least trouble.

Does the company colony need anything before the truck comes?
