Shifting homes across Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand has two halves, Garhwal in the west and Kumaon in the east, and each has its plains and its hills. The plains and foothills, from Haridwar, Roorkee and the Doon valley to Haldwani, Rudrapur and Kashipur in the Terai, hold most of the population. Above them rise the hill districts, Tehri, Pauri, Chamoli, Nainital, Almora and Pithoragarh among them, where houses sit on slopes and roads wind for hours. Oddly, a truck from Dehradun to Haldwani leaves the state for part of the way, through Najibabad in Uttar Pradesh.
A move in the plains is an ordinary one: independent houses, apartment blocks and township flats, with a full-size truck at or near the door. In the hills the same move turns into a two-stage job. The big truck stops where the road allows, a smaller vehicle takes the load up bends that a 19 ft truck cannot turn on, and at many houses the crew carries the last part down or up steps. Mussoorie, Nainital, Almora and Lansdowne all work this way, and the quote depends on how far the house is from the road.
People come for government in Dehradun, the capital, and for the Indian Military Academy, the Forest Research Institute, the Survey of India and ONGC's offices there. IIT Roorkee and the Bengal Sappers are in Roorkee, BHEL and the SIDCUL estate in Haridwar, and car and component plants at Pantnagar near Rudrapur. AIIMS Rishikesh and GB Pant University at Pantnagar add doctors, faculty and students. Tourism and yoga bring people to Rishikesh, and families from the hills move down to Dehradun and Haldwani for schools and hospitals.

Homes and buildings
Dehradun still has old bungalows with gardens on Rajpur Road and in the cantonment, but most of the valley is now two and three floor family houses, with more apartment societies each year along Sahastradhara Road and Haridwar Road. Haridwar and Rishikesh mix family houses with ashrams and guesthouses. Rudrapur has flats and colonies that grew with its industrial estates, and Haldwani is a market town of family houses. In the hills, a house may have its door at road level and its rooms stacked below, or be reached only by a footpath, and old stone homes have narrow doors and low ceilings.

Between cities
The road up the Ganga valley starts at Rishikesh and climbs through Devprayag and Srinagar in Garhwal towards Badrinath, as part of the Char Dham route. Dehradun to Mussoorie is a steep 35 km, and the road to Nainital climbs from Kathgodam, just above Haldwani. In the plains, the highway from Meerut and Muzaffarnagar reaches Roorkee and Haridwar, and Rudrapur and Haldwani connect south to Bareilly and Moradabad. Hill roads are narrow, with hairpin bends and few places to stop, and they close after landslides. A loaded truck is slow on every one of them.

Moving into or out of Uttarakhand
Moving personal household goods into Uttarakhand, or out of it, involves no sale, so the load travels with an inventory and a self-declaration, and there is normally no e-way bill to raise. A car staying in its new state for more than 12 months must be registered there, and the Uttarakhand RTO holding its record has to issue an NOC first. BH series plates are an option for defence and government employees and for anyone working for a firm present in at least four states. Some border areas in the high districts lie beyond the inner line and need a permit even for Indians, but the towns and hill stations need none.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon, late June to mid-September, is the season to plan around. Heavy rain brings landslides that close hill roads for hours or days, and low parts of Haridwar and Rudrapur waterlog. Winter brings snow to Mussoorie, Nainital and higher towns in some years, and fog to the plains in December and January. The Char Dham yatra, from about May to October, fills the roads above Rishikesh, and the Kanwar Yatra in Shravan and the Kumbh melas close Haridwar to heavy traffic. October to November and March to April are the most workable months.

Our new house in Mussoorie is about 60 steps below the road. How do the goods get there?
The truck from the plains stops at Dehradun or a wide point below Mussoorie, and the goods go up in a smaller vehicle to the nearest spot on the road above your house. From there the crew carries everything down the steps, with heavy items taken apart beforehand. Photos or a short video of the path, sent at the survey stage, show how many steps there are, and that sets the crew size and the time.
Can we move in Haridwar or Roorkee during the Kanwar Yatra?
For about a fortnight in the month of Shravan, which falls in July or August, it is difficult. Lakhs of kanwariyas come to Haridwar for Ganga water, and the highway through Roorkee towards Meerut and Delhi is closed to heavy vehicles or diverted. Within Haridwar, a small vehicle at first light can sometimes get through, but a full truck coming in or going out should go before the yatra starts or wait until it is over.
Should we avoid a move to Almora or Pauri in the monsoon?
If you can. Between July and mid-September landslides regularly block the roads into the hills, sometimes for a day and sometimes longer, and a truck can end up waiting at a roadside town until the debris is cleared. We give a monsoon hill move a window of dates, keep the load covered, and send it up only when the road is reported open. October and November are far more predictable.
How far is Haldwani from Dehradun by road?
Roughly 280 to 300 km, and the usual route leaves Uttarakhand for part of the way, through Najibabad and the Bijnor side of Uttar Pradesh, before coming back in near Jaspur and Kashipur. A household packed in Dehradun is normally unloaded in Haldwani the next day. The stretch through another state makes no difference to household goods, which carry the same inventory and declaration throughout.
