Bareilly is a cantonment and railway city with a large old bazaar in the middle. The Cantonment, home of the Jat Regimental Centre, and the Air Force station bring defence families on postings. Izatnagar has the railway division offices and the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, each with its own colony. The civil city is independent houses: Rajendra Nagar, DD Puram, Model Town, Prem Nagar and the newer colonies along the Pilibhit and Nainital roads.
The old city, around Kutubkhana, Bada Bazaar, Shahamatganj and the Qila area, is dense, with houses of three and four floors facing lanes that take a handcart. Bareilly is known for its cane and bamboo furniture, and a home here often has plenty of it, light but bulky, beside the heavy wooden almirahs. The old city lanes around Kutubkhana, Bada Bazaar and the Dargah are too narrow and crowded for any truck, so everything is hand-carried to a small vehicle or handcart, with the main truck parked on a wider road.

Chaupula, Kutubkhana, Satellite and the Delhi road crossings jam at office hours, and heavy vehicles have restricted hours inside the city. The Urs of Ala Hazrat, held every year, fills the old city and the roads around the Dargah for several days, and the Kanwar season in July brings diversions on the highways too. Loading early on a weekday avoids most of this.
