Mahabaleshwar is a small town on a plateau at about 1,350 m, and most of the people who live here work around its visitors. The market and the streets behind it are packed with shops, lodges and staff rooms. Around them, spread through the forest, are old bungalows with tiled roofs, large gardens and long driveways, many of them now hotels, resorts or second homes. Strawberry farms fill the villages towards Panchgani, and Panchgani itself is known for its boarding schools.
Moving a bungalow here is its own kind of job. The furniture is often old, heavy and made for the house, the driveway may be steep or gravelled, and the gate may be a long way from the door. Society and building rules
There are few housing societies here. Hotels and resorts set their own times for a move, usually quiet midweek days or the monsoon months when some close, and want furniture moved without disturbing guests. Schools in Panchgani deal with moves through the school office, around term dates. For rented staff rooms and cottages, the owner usually lives nearby and wants the handover agreed. Older bungalows often have a caretaker, so tell us who will open the gate on the day.

Where the truck can stand
The ghats are the first limit. The Pasarni ghat from Wai, the road up from Medha and the Ambenali ghat towards Poladpur are narrow, with tight bends, and a long truck is the wrong vehicle for them. A 14 ft truck or smaller does most moves here, with a second run when the load is big. In town the market streets leave little room to stand, and bungalow driveways are often steep, so the crew may carry the last stretch on foot.

Traffic and timing
Tourist season decides everything. From April to early June, over Diwali and from Christmas to the New Year, the roads up from Wai and the streets around the market and Venna Lake jam with cars, and a truck can lose hours. Weekends are busy most of the year. A weekday outside those periods is best, starting early in the morning. School moves in Panchgani fall at the start and end of term, when parents' cars add to the traffic.

Weather and the months to plan around
Mahabaleshwar gets some of the heaviest rain in Maharashtra, several metres between June and September, with days of cloud, fog and wind. Roads are slippery, landslips on the ghats can close them for a time, and anything left open soaks through. Cartons get a double plastic wrap, and loading happens in breaks in the rain. Houses shut through the monsoon also grow mould on leather and wood. The dry months from October to May are the time to move.

Can a normal truck get up to Mahabaleshwar?

Yes. We plan the work for quiet midweek days, or for the monsoon if the property closes, and move one floor or block at a time. Beds, mattresses and televisions are wrapped and carried out by the service entrance where there is one. Your manager tells us the hours, and the quote lists every room and item.
Is it possible to move during the monsoon here?
Possible, but it is the hardest time. Rain can last all day, the ghats are slippery and sometimes closed by landslips, and damp gets into anything not sealed. If you must move between June and September, we pack with double plastic, load between showers and keep a spare date. October to May is much easier.
Our bungalow has a long, steep driveway. Will that be a problem?
It adds time and people. If the truck cannot turn at the top or grip on the gravel, it stays at the gate and the crew carries everything along the driveway, which needs more hands. We look at the driveway on a video call and put the extra crew in the quote.
