Shifting homes in Dharwad
Dharwad is a university town with a district headquarters attached. Karnataka University at Pavate Nagar, the University of Agricultural Sciences at Krishi Nagar, IIT Dharwad and the SDM medical college at Sattur set its rhythm, along with the High Court bench and the district offices. It is known for its Hindustani musicians and Kannada writers, and for the peda sold in its sweet shops.
The housing is older and more spread out than in Hubli. Malmaddi, Saptapur and the streets around Subhash Road have stone and tiled houses on generous plots, with big trees in the compound, wooden rafters and rooms full of books. Faculty live in campus quarters and students in rooms and hostels around the colleges. Newer layouts such as Kalyan Nagar and Shrinagar, and the plots along the Belgaum road, are filling in with two storey houses and a few apartment blocks.
Much of the moving here follows the academic year. Teachers, researchers and students arrive in June and July and leave in April and May, and faculty transfers come with fixed joining dates. Families who settled here to educate their children often move on once the last one graduates, to Bangalore, Belgaum or a home town. People also leave the old houses for newer layouts, a short drive with a great deal of packing.

Society and building rules
Most Dharwad homes are independent houses, so the permission you need is usually the owner's, plus a word with the neighbours if the truck will block a shared lane for a few hours. The newer apartment blocks ask for notice to the association and settled dues. University and government quarters are the formal ones: the estate office wants the quarters emptied and inspected, keys returned and sometimes a clearance from the department, and loading is set for the eve of that inspection.

Where the truck can stand
A truck gets to the gate of almost every house in the layouts, and campus roads are wide once the gate lets the vehicle in. The narrow parts are the lanes behind Subhash Road and around the old market, too tight for a truck, so it stays out on the wider road while a pickup ferries the goods. The older neighbourhoods have low branches and overhead wires, and we send a truck that clears them. On the Hubli road the BRTS corridor rules out stopping, and loading is done from a side street.

Traffic and timing
Dharwad is quiet by the standards of a district town, and traffic only really builds on the Hubli road, around Jubilee Circle and on Subhash Road in the late morning and evening. The busy weeks are set by the colleges: the end of the academic year in April and May, and admissions in June and July, when rooms and quarters change hands together. Book those weeks early. Ganesh Chaturthi processions close parts of the old town for an evening.

Weather and the months to plan around
Dharwad sits at the edge of the Malnad, a little greener and wetter than Hubli, and the monsoon from June to September brings steady rain and a damp that gets into old houses. We wrap books, files and wooden furniture with a moisture layer and keep cartons off wet floors. April and May are the hot months, with afternoons around 37°C. Cool, dry weather from November to February makes that the easiest stretch for moving.

Yes. Once the estate office gives you an inspection date, we pack and load on the previous day and leave the quarters empty. A home with a large library takes longer to pack than its size suggests, so we count the shelves at the survey. The reimbursement claim is covered by an item-by-item inventory and a GST invoice.
Can a big truck reach an old house in Saptapur or Malmaddi?
Usually, yes. The roads there are wide enough and the gates are generous. What we check is the trees, because branches hang low over several streets and a tall container truck can hit them. At the survey we look at the approach and send a vehicle of the right height, and where needed a pickup handles the last part.
When should students book a move out of Dharwad?
As soon as exam dates are out. In late April and May hostel rooms and rented rooms empty together, and vehicles get booked up. A few cartons, a cot and a cycle may travel on a shared truck to a big city if one is going that way, but that is something we check for and cannot promise, so leave a few days of slack.
