Shifting homes across Uttar Pradesh
Uttar Pradesh is several regions under one name, each with its own kind of move. The west, next to Delhi, has Noida, Greater Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut, with Agra, Mathura and Aligarh to the south and Moradabad and Bareilly in Rohilkhand towards the Uttarakhand border. Awadh, in the middle, has Lucknow and Kanpur. The east, often called Purvanchal, has Prayagraj, Varanasi and Gorakhpur, older and denser cities, and Gorakhpur is well over 700 km by road from Noida.
The NCR towns are moves of towers and permissions: a facility office, a booked service lift, a slot at the loading bay, and in some Greater Noida West projects, lifts still run by the builder. The old cities are the reverse. Behind Varanasi's ghats, in Lucknow's Chowk and Aminabad, around Kanpur's markets and in Agra's older quarters, no truck fits the lanes, and goods leave by hand, on a handcart or in a tempo. Everywhere in between are colonies of independent houses, the commonest home in the state.
The capital, the courts, the universities and the railway headquarters keep transfers coming. Lucknow has the secretariat and the army's Central Command, Prayagraj the High Court and North Central Railway, Gorakhpur the North Eastern Railway and an AIIMS, and Varanasi BHU and the locomotive works. Kanpur has IIT, the ordnance factories and an air force station, and Noida its IT parks and phone factories. Our Lucknow office is in Kalyanpur West, and moves anywhere in the state are planned from there.

Homes and buildings
Noida, Greater Noida West and Ghaziabad's Indirapuram and Raj Nagar Extension are tower country, twenty storeys and more, with facility offices and loading bays. Lucknow is mostly LDA colonies of two and three storey houses, from Aliganj and Indira Nagar to Gomti Nagar, with apartment blocks along Sultanpur Road and Shaheed Path. Kanpur, Agra and Aligarh mix old mohallas with newer colonies, and the eastern cities keep large family houses built round courtyards, often shared by several generations. Railway colonies, cantonments and campuses such as BHU and AMU run their own gates and handovers.

Between cities
Expressways now link most of the big cities. The Yamuna Expressway runs from Greater Noida to Agra, the Agra-Lucknow Expressway carries on to the capital, and the Purvanchal Expressway goes east from Lucknow towards Ghazipur, with a link expressway up to Gorakhpur. NH 19, the old GT Road, connects Agra, Kanpur, Prayagraj and Varanasi. Speed is not the difficulty on these roads. The slow parts are at the ends, getting a truck through Ghaziabad or Meerut traffic, into central Kanpur or Varanasi, or across the Ganga and Yamuna bridges at Prayagraj at the wrong hour.

Moving into or out of Uttar Pradesh
Moving your own used household goods into or out of Uttar Pradesh is not a sale. The load goes with an item by item list and a declaration from you, which stands in for an e-way bill. Any car that is going to spend more than 12 months in another state has to be re-registered there, and the process begins at the RTO that gave it its UP number, which issues a no objection certificate. If you are in central or state government service, in the forces, or with a company that has offices in four or more states, a BH series number spares you that re-registration.

Weather and the months to plan around
Three seasons need planning. From April to June the plains bake, with afternoons of 45°C in Prayagraj, Kanpur and Agra and hot westerly winds, so work starts early and pauses at midday. The monsoon, late June to September, waterlogs low colonies in Lucknow, Kanpur and Prayagraj, and the Rapti and Ghaghra flood villages around Gorakhpur in a bad year. In Shravan, the Kanwar Yatra closes highways in the west to heavy traffic for days. December and January bring dense fog, and expressway speed limits are cut. For an easy move, aim for October or November, or for February and March.

Our Greater Noida West society still has its lifts with the builder. Who do we ask for the move?
Usually the builder's maintenance office, until an owners' association takes over. Ask it early for the move-out permission, the service lift booking and the permitted hours, and clear any maintenance dues, because the gate pass depends on them. Renters are usually asked for the owner's written consent too. We send the truck number and the crew names to whoever runs the gate a day ahead.
Is it hard to move in Prayagraj during the Magh Mela or a Kumbh?
On some days, yes. The Magh Mela draws pilgrims to the Sangam every January and February, and in a Kumbh year the crowds are far larger. On the main bathing days, roads near the Sangam and several bridges are closed to trucks and diversions run across the city. Moves in Civil Lines or on the far side of the city are still possible on other days, and a long load leaving Prayagraj should avoid the bathing dates.
Our house is in a gali near the Varanasi ghats. How do the goods come out?
By hand for the first stretch. The galis between the ghats and Godowlia or Dashashwamedh Road will take a scooter and not much more, so each piece is carried out by the crew to a small vehicle waiting where the lane widens, and that shuttles to the main truck. Heavy furniture is taken apart in the house. The route is checked at the survey, and it sets the crew size and the time.
How long does a move from Lucknow to Noida take?
It is about 500 km on the Agra-Lucknow and Yamuna expressways, and a loaded truck needs the whole day for it. Typically a 2 BHK is packed and loaded on day one and unloaded in Noida on day two, once the society there has given its slot. In the foggy weeks of December and January, lower expressway speeds can push delivery back by half a day.
