Shifting homes in Pen
Pen is Maharashtra's idol town. Workshops in the town and in villages such as Hamrapur, Johe and Kalwa make Ganpati idols through the year, and from early summer they are loaded onto trucks for Mumbai, the rest of the state and abroad. The old town is a market of shops and two-storey houses on lanes off the main road, and many homes double as workshops, with drying clay and plaster shapes filling the ground floor. Around it are village houses in their wadis and newer apartment blocks near the station.
A house that doubles as a workshop needs care. Finished idols, moulds and paint stock can share rooms with the family's furniture, and nothing belonging to the trade is touched until the owner decides what goes and how. Houses in the villages sit behind compound walls on lanes that narrow as they go, and the truck may have to stop well short. The new buildings are simpler, with a lift in the taller ones, a gate, parking and a society office.
Pen's newer growth comes from outside the idol trade. JSW Steel's works at Dolvi, on the Dharamtar creek, employ engineers and contract staff, and Alibaug, the district town, is half an hour away. The Atal Setu from Sewri has brought central Mumbai much closer, and projects around Pen are sold to Mumbai and Navi Mumbai buyers as first or weekend homes. Young people from Pen take jobs in Navi Mumbai, Panvel and Mumbai, many travelling by the trains from Pen station.

Packers and movers charges in Pen
Pen is small. From the bazaar to the station is less than 2 km, and out to Vadkhal about 6 km, with Hamrapur not much further, so a house is loaded and unloaded on the same day. A move to Alibaug, about 30 km away, or to Nagothane, 25 km south, fits in a day as well. What takes time is a house that is also a workshop, the carry out of a narrow bazaar lane, and NH 66, which is slow through its construction stretches.

Pen bazaar and the old town
Shops and houses on lanes off the main road, many with idol work on the ground floor. The lanes clog by 10 am, so a pickup starts at dawn.
Hamrapur and Johe
Idol-making villages where workshops fill the lanes from early summer to the festival. Outside those months access is easier, though the last lane is often narrow.
Vadkhal and the highway
The junction where the Alibaug road leaves NH 66. Houses and new buildings near it are easy to reach, but the highway is no place to stop and load.
The station side
Newer apartment blocks near Pen station, with lifts in some and a society that wants notice. A 14 ft truck usually stands inside the compound.
Dolvi and the JSW side
Staff housing and rented flats for the steel plant, with company gates that want crew details ahead and vacating dates set by the employer.
New projects on the town's edge
Residential projects still filling up, where the builder may hold the lift and the gate and the roads inside are not always finished.

Society and building rules
Societies near the station and in the new projects ask for a written note to the secretary several days before, a clear maintenance account and a daylight move. Several projects here are only part occupied and the builder's office still controls the lift, so confirm the slot with them. Tenants need the owner's go-ahead on paper or by email, as a lot of these flats belong to buyers living in Mumbai. Company housing for JSW is vacated on the company's date. In the bazaar and the villages there is no office, only neighbours to warn.

Where the truck can stand
On NH 66, the main road into town and inside most society compounds, a 17 ft truck has no trouble. The bazaar lanes are the problem: narrow, lined with shops and, in the idol season, stacked with finished Ganpatis waiting for their trucks, so a pickup shuttles to the main road. Village lanes around Hamrapur and Johe run between walls, and a truck that gets in may have nowhere to turn. The last stretch is seen on video first, and the vehicle is chosen to fit it.

Traffic and timing
From about June to the festival, the idol trade takes over. Trucks and tempos load finished idols in the workshop lanes, often late into the night, and the roads out of town carry them to Mumbai and beyond. A move in the bazaar is harder then than at any other time of year. Ganesh Chaturthi itself brings processions and immersions, and NH 66 fills with festival traffic heading south. October to May is easier, with a weekday start around 7 am, before the market opens.

Weather and the months to plan around
Pen gets a heavy coastal monsoon from June to September, with water standing on low stretches of the highway and in the lanes near the creek. The idol makers keep their work under plastic and tin sheds, and furniture needs the same thinking: a plastic layer under the wrap, tarpaulins on the truck and cartons kept off wet floors. April and May are hot and very humid. The dry, cooler months from November to February are the ones to pick.

Moving from Pen to another city
Pen's young people move to Navi Mumbai, Panvel and Mumbai for work, while Mumbai buyers taking flats here bring households the other way. Steel plant staff move on transfer, and families move out to Alibaug or down the coast. Khopoli is close by the inland road.

We make idols and live above the workshop. Can you move us during the season?
It is better not to, since the lanes are full of trucks and your own work is at its peak. If the date cannot move, we pack the family's rooms first and leave the idols, moulds and materials to you, because the people who made them know best how they travel. The pickup works around the workshop's loading times, often at first light.
JSW is moving me from Dolvi to another works. Can the billing go to the company?
Yes. We raise the GST invoice on JSW, or on whichever company is paying, with a full itemised list attached, and we help arrange insurance for the long run. Share the day your Dolvi flat has to be empty and your first day at the new works, and the packing falls between the two. You can track the load by its consignment number, and a car goes by carrier.
We bought a flat in a new project near Pen, and the society is not formed yet. Who gives permission?
The builder's office, in most projects. They hold the keys to the service lift, decide the hours when workers are not using it, and may ask for your possession letter at the gate. Get their slot in writing, and if the internal road is still unfinished, tell us, since a truck may have to wait outside while the crew carries in.
Can you move us from Navi Mumbai to Pen in one day?
Yes. It is about 55 km, so a flat loaded in Navi Mumbai in the morning is unloaded in Pen by the afternoon. The Navi Mumbai society's hours usually decide when we can start, and NH 66 can be slow through the construction near Panvel, so an early slot helps. Avoid the weeks before Ganeshotsav, when the highway is at its busiest.
