The town has the collectorate, the district court and the zilla parishad, with apartment blocks of a few storeys and older tiled houses around the market and the ST stand. Outside it, the coastal villages of Kihim, Awas, Saswane, Varsoli, Nagaon and Akshi are filled with bungalows and farmhouses behind laterite walls, many of them in wadis of coconut and areca palm and opened only at weekends.
The two kinds of home make two kinds of job. A flat in town is an ordinary move with a staircase or a small lift. A second home is furnished in stages as the interiors finish, or cleared when the owners sell, and it is usually a caretaker who meets the crew at the gate. Flats and older houses around the ST stand, the market and the district offices. The market road is narrow and crowded by 10 am, so loading there starts early.
Kihim and Chondhi

Mandwa, Awas and Saswane

Society and building rules
A society in town expects a note to its secretary some days before and the maintenance account settled, and the watchman may stop a tenant's furniture until the owner has written in. Gated bungalow schemes near Mandwa and Awas keep a register, and some want the owner's written instruction before a truck loads from a villa, which is sensible when the owner is away. RCF quarters at Kurul go back to the company after its own inspection. Village houses need nothing formal, though a word with the neighbours helps when the pickup blocks a shared lane.

Where the truck can stand
The main road from Pen, the town roads and the road north to Mandwa take a 17 ft truck. The trouble starts in the villages, where lanes run between compound walls barely wider than a car and end at a gate with no room to reverse. Near the beaches the ground turns to sand, which a loaded truck cannot cross. In both cases the truck stands on firm tar at the nearest junction, and a pickup or hand trolleys make the final trips. Palm fronds and low cables over the village lanes can also catch a tall container.

Traffic and timing
Alibaug fills up at weekends. Friday evening and Saturday morning bring cars from Mumbai down the Pen road, and Sunday afternoon sends them back, so a weekday move is much quicker. The week from Christmas to New Year is the busiest of all, with the beach roads at a standstill. Ganeshotsav and Shimga, the Konkan Holi, put processions on the village roads. A Tuesday to Thursday slot, with loading under way by 8 am, suits most moves here.

Weather and the months to plan around
The monsoon arrives in early June and stays until late September, and on this coast it comes with strong wind off the sea. The passenger ferries from the Gateway of India to Mandwa stop for those months, the village lanes turn to mud and the sandy approaches get worse. Everything is wrapped with plastic under the outer layer and the truck carries tarpaulins. Salt air works on metal and electronics all year, so a fridge or television that has stood unused in a villa is checked before packing. From November through February the air is dry and a villa can be emptied without a tarpaulin in sight.

Our villa at Awas is locked most of the year. Can you move it while we stay in Mumbai?
Yes. The survey is done on a video call with you or the caretaker, and you get a written, itemised quote before anything is fixed. On the day the caretaker opens the rooms, and the inventory is checked against the quote as the house is packed. If the scheme has security, send a written note to the gate naming the date and the truck, so the guard does not hold the load back.
The lane to our bungalow in Kihim is very narrow. How will the furniture get out?
Big pieces are opened up inside the house, carried to the gate and loaded onto a pickup, which runs them to the main truck waiting at the nearest junction with room to turn. You walk us down the lane with your phone camera, and the extra pickup trips appear in the quote as a line of their own. If a sofa is wider than the gate, we look for another way out before the day.
Can you move our household from Mumbai to Alibaug in one day?
Usually, yes. By road through Panvel and Pen it is about 95 km, so a flat packed in Mumbai in the morning is unloaded here by the evening. The Mumbai end sets the pace, with its society slot and service lift, so we start there early. Avoid a Friday or a Sunday, when the Alibaug road carries weekend traffic in both directions.
