Its waterfront has rows of coloured apartment buildings along a promenade, and the slopes above hold villas, row houses and serviced apartments. Development slowed for years, and many flats are second homes that stand closed for months and are visited on weekends and holidays. A smaller number of families, school staff and hotel workers live here all year.

Inside the gate the roads are well made, but a truck cannot always reach the door. On the waterfront, vehicles stop at set points and goods go along the promenade on trolleys. Hillside villas are reached by steep, narrow roads where a smaller vehicle is safer. The approach through the ghat has tight bends and steep gradients, and a long, heavily loaded truck is the wrong vehicle for it, so a smaller truck is often used for the climb.

Weekends are busy with visitors, especially in the monsoon, when the ghat road and the waterfront fill with cars, so moves are best planned for a weekday. Owners who live elsewhere often want a Saturday delivery so they can be present, and then an early arrival works. The ghat is slow after dark and in fog, and loads are timed to climb and come down in daylight.

The hills around the Warasgaon lake take some of the district's heaviest rain between June and September, and stay in cloud for weeks. The ghat road sees landslips after heavy rain, and visibility can drop to a few metres, so loaded trucks are kept off it in the worst spells. Flats that stand closed through the monsoon take in damp, and fabric, wood and mattresses are checked for mould before packing. October to May is the easiest period, with cool, clear winter mornings.

What permission does Lavasa need for a moving truck?
Usually a written note from the owner to the estate office giving the flat number, the date, the truck's registration and who will be in the crew, sent a day or two ahead.
