Shifting homes in Hingoli
Hingoli became a district only in 1999, carved out of Parbhani, and the town still feels like a big market town with a district's offices added to it. Houses are mostly independent, one or two floors on their own plots, with a newer ring of colonies around the collectorate and along the roads to Nanded, Akola and Kalamnuri. Apartment buildings are rare, and lifts rarer still.
The district is known for Aundha Nagnath, one of the Jyotirlinga temples, and for Narsi, the birthplace of Sant Namdev. Aundha taluka has also been chosen as the site of LIGO-India, the gravitational wave observatory, which will bring scientists and technical staff in the years ahead. For now, government postings bring the steady flow of arrivals: collectorate staff, police, teachers and hospital staff, each with a joining date.
A move from a Hingoli house means a lot of carrying. There are outside staircases to terraces, store rooms with grain and trunks, and furniture made by a local carpenter that was never meant to come apart. Where the truck can stand
Most of Hingoli is easy for a 14 ft truck. Colony roads are wide and there is little traffic. The old market lanes are narrower, and a truck standing there blocks everything, so a small vehicle shuttles from the main road. Village addresses in the district are the real limit: a narrow approach or a field road where the truck stops short and the last part is carried.

Hingoli celebrates Dasara on a big scale, with a fair and crowds that slow the town's roads for days, so a move near the grounds is best kept away from it. Weekly market day fills the main road through the old town. Otherwise traffic is light, and the one fixed rule is to start early in the hot months, with the truck loaded before 11 am.
