The old city, with its markets and the Rajrajeshwar temple, lies on one bank, and the newer town grew on the other around the railway station, Civil Lines and the collectorate. Housing is mainly independent houses and rows of two and three storey buildings, with apartment blocks rising on Gorakshan Road, at Kaulkhed and along the roads out towards Murtizapur and Washim.
Cotton made Akola, and it still drives much of the town. Ginning and pressing units, oil mills and dal mills line the MIDC and the roads out of town, and the cotton market draws growers from across the district. Dr. Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, the agricultural university, has a big campus with staff housing, and the railway junction, the government medical college and the district offices bring people on posting.

Society and building rules
Akola has a handful of apartment societies, mostly informal, which want to be told the date and sometimes ask for dues to be cleared. Tenants should agree the date with the owner and settle the electricity bill. PDKV, railway and medical college quarters are returned via their estate offices after an inspection, and cotton and oil mill staff housing is returned through the company's admin, which usually wants a no-dues slip first.

Where the truck can stand
Most of the newer town lets a 14 or 17 ft truck stand outside the house. The old city does not: its lanes are narrow, crowded and full of two-wheelers, so a smaller vehicle does short runs. Near Tower Chowk and the main market the truck can load outside only briefly, so the crew works fast. On the PDKV campus and in railway colonies, security decides where the truck goes and where it stops.

Traffic and timing
Mornings are best. The market around Tower Chowk and the roads into the old city fill by 11 am, and the Morna bridges are slow at office hours. Cotton season, from about October into winter, brings lines of cotton trucks and tractors into the market yard and the ginning units. In Shravan, the Kavad and Palkhi processions to the Rajrajeshwar temple close roads through town, and Ganesh and Navratri processions follow.

Our home is in the old city across the Morna. Is that a problem?

I live on the PDKV campus. What do I need before the truck arrives?
