Yavatmal is a district town with the market around Datta Chowk at its centre and colonies spreading along the roads to Arni, Darwha, Dhamangaon and Wadgaon. Homes are chiefly independent houses of one or two floors, and the apartment buildings of recent years are small, often with no lift. Older houses near the market stand close together and are harder to reach. Quarters for the collectorate, the police and the medical college add a large block of staff housing.
The district is cotton country, and ginning units, the market yard and seed and fertiliser dealers keep the town busy through the season. Shri Vasantrao Naik Government Medical College and the engineering colleges bring doctors and students. To the south-east, the Wani coal belt has Western Coalfields mines and colonies, and Pandharkawada, near the Tipeshwar sanctuary, sits on the national highway to Hyderabad.

Yavatmal has few formal societies. Tenants agree the date with the owner, pay rent to the day and clear the power bill, and the owner usually wants to see the house empty before returning the deposit. Doctors and staff in medical college quarters, teachers in government housing and WCL employees in the Wani colonies go through an estate office inspection before handing back the keys, and that should be booked before the truck is.

Where the truck can stand
Wide roads in the newer colonies let a 14 ft truck park outside the house, and there is little traffic. Around Datta Chowk and the older market lanes the truck cannot stand, so a tempo or pickup carries the load to it. Some new layouts on Wadgaon Road and the town's edges have unpaved lanes that go soft in the monsoon. In the Wani coal belt the colony roads are good, but coal trucks crowd the highway.

Traffic and timing
Mornings are quiet, and the market around Datta Chowk picks up from late morning into the evening. Navratri is a big festival in Yavatmal, with Durga pandals across town and crowds late into the night, and roads near them are slow. Ganesh festival brings processions. In the cotton season, the market yard and ginning units pull tractors and trucks onto the roads into town.
