Shifting homes in Gorakhpur
Gorakhpur is the headquarters of the North Eastern Railway, and the railway shapes the city. Rows of railway quarters and officers' bungalows fill the colonies around the station. The civil side has Civil Lines, Betiahata and the Golghar shops, the old city has its bazaars around Ghantaghar, Reti Chowk and Urdu Bazar, and the newer colonies of Taramandal and Rapti Nagar spread out towards Ramgarh Tal.
Most homes here are houses or low apartment blocks, and what shapes a move is dates and weight. Railway and army quarters have handover dates that do not move. Family houses hold heavy wooden furniture, grain drums and tin trunks, and the lanes near the bazaars take nothing bigger than a tempo.
Besides the railway, the Gorkha Recruiting Depot and the army at Kunraghat, the Air Force station, AIIMS Gorakhpur, BRD Medical College, Gorakhpur University and MMMUT bring staff and students to the city. The fertiliser plant and the GIDA industrial area at Sahjanwa employ engineers. Plenty of older couples also move out to join children working in Delhi, Lucknow or Mumbai.

Gorakhpur is compact. Civil Lines to Taramandal is about 7 km and the railway colonies to Rapti Nagar about 10 km, so a 2 BHK is wrapped up in one day. Heavy furniture sets the pace more than the drive does, and a big family house takes a day just to pack. The Golghar, Mohaddipur and station roads are slow at peak hours, and the old city needs its small vehicle.

Society and building rules
Few Gorakhpur homes have a society office. Apartment blocks in Taramandal and Rapti Nagar want a word with the secretary and the date, and a few of the newer ones ask for dues first. Railway quarters are handed back through the division's process, with meter readings and an inspection, and army quarters at Kunraghat work much the same way. Wherever we can, the house is packed and cleared a day before the inspection.

Where the truck can stand
Trucks reach most homes in Taramandal, Rapti Nagar, the railway colonies and Civil Lines. The old city is different: Reti Chowk, Urdu Bazar, Sahabganj and Hindi Bazar are narrow and packed, so a small vehicle shuttles to a truck on the main road. Around the Gorakhnath temple the roads are crowded with pilgrims most days. In a flood year, some low colonies stay waterlogged for days and a truck cannot get near.

Traffic and timing
Golghar, the station road, Dharmshala Bazar and Asuran Chowk are the worst stretches, especially from 10 am to 1 pm and in the evening. Makar Sankranti brings the Khichdi Mela at the Gorakhnath temple, and the roads around it close for days. Big trucks are held back from the centre through most of the daytime, which is why packing happens first and loading waits until the rush eases.

Weather and the months to plan around
Gorakhpur gets a heavy monsoon, and from July to September the Rapti and Rohini can rise enough to flood low colonies and roads for days. Packing in those months gets an extra plastic layer. Summers are hot and humid, often above 42°C in May and June. Dense fog in December and January delays trucks and trains alike. October, November, February and March are the easiest months.

Can you move us during the monsoon floods?
Inside the city, yes, as long as the road to your home is open. If a colony is under water, we wait for it to drain. Everything packed in those months gets a plastic layer beneath the outer wrap, and a long-distance truck is given a wider delivery window.
Can a truck reach a house near Urdu Bazar?
Not to the door. The truck stays on a wider road, and a small vehicle, or a handcart where even that will not fit, brings the goods out. We start early, before the wholesale traffic builds, and send enough hands for the carry. Before any of that, you show us the lane over a video call.
Will the Khichdi Mela affect my moving date?
Only if you live near the Gorakhnath temple or have to pass it. Around Makar Sankranti in January, huge crowds come for the mela, and nearby roads close to vehicles for several days. Elsewhere in the city it just means more traffic. We keep the date outside that week if the temple side is on your route.
