Daman is a small coastal town split by the Damanganga river. Nani Daman, on the north bank, has the market, most of the apartment buildings and the hotels along the Devka beach road. Moti Daman, across the bridge, is the old Portuguese town, with the fort walls, the cathedral, the secretariat and quiet streets of old houses and official bungalows. Around both, the industrial estates at Dabhel, Kachigam and Bhimpore are full of factories, rented rooms and staff flats.
The factories are why most newcomers arrive. Plastics, pharma, packaging and textile units employ managers, engineers and workers from across India, and they rent flats in Nani Daman or rooms near the estates. Others work in Vapi across the boundary and live here. The territory's administration brings officers and teachers, and transfers them between Daman, Diu and Silvassa.
Housing is plain to work with: apartment buildings of three to five storeys, many without a service lift, rooms and chawls near the factories, and old houses and bungalows in Moti Daman. The real effort is the stairs in the walk-up buildings. Being next to Gujarat brings one local rule to know: a truck leaving Daman is in Gujarat within minutes, where liquor is prohibited, so no bottles go into the load.

Daman is only a few kilometres from end to end. Nani Daman to Moti Daman is about 3 km over the bridge, and Dabhel or Kachigam to the Devka road around 5 or 6 km, so a flat can be emptied and set up again in a single day, often by early afternoon. Moves to Vapi, just across the boundary, are nearly as short. What takes time is carrying down the stairs of a walk-up building, and the factory traffic on the Kachigam and Dabhel roads at shift change.

Apartment buildings in Nani Daman usually have a society or a builder's office that wants notice, the maintenance paid and the move done in daytime. Tenants should tell the owner first, since many flats are let through agents who hold the keys. Company-leased flats and guest houses have to be handed back to the admin department, often with an inventory check. Government quarters in Moti Daman follow the administration's vacating process, and the loading is timed to it.

Where the truck can stand
Most of Daman is flat, and the main roads take a 14 or 17 ft truck. The tight spots are the market lanes of Nani Daman, the old streets and gateways of Moti Daman, and the roads between factories, where lorries park two deep. At the beach villages the ground near the sand goes soft after rain. In each case the truck waits on firm, open ground and a pickup does the last part.

Traffic and timing
Weekends are the busy days in Daman, when visitors from Gujarat fill the Devka and Jampore roads and the hotels, and vehicles leaving for Gujarat queue at the border checks. A weekday move avoids all of that. Factory shift changes crowd the industrial roads in the early morning and afternoon, and the Nani Daman market is busiest in the evening. Mid morning on a weekday is usually the easiest window.

Weather and the months to plan around
Daman is humid all year and hot from March to May, with sticky afternoons in the mid 30s. The monsoon, June to September, brings heavy rain off the Arabian Sea, and low roads near the river and the estates can flood for a few hours. We wrap everything in plastic under the outer layer and keep cartons covered between the door and the truck. Salt air is hard on metal and electronics packed for long. Aim for the drier, cooler weeks between November and February.

Can I pack liquor with my household goods?
No. The truck crosses into Gujarat a few minutes after leaving Daman, and Gujarat does not allow liquor to be carried without a permit, so vehicles can be checked at the border. We do not pack or carry bottles, opened or sealed. Everything else, the bar cabinet included, travels as usual.
Can you move us between Daman and Vapi in one day?
Yes, easily. The two towns are about 15 km apart, so a flat packed in the morning is usually set up in the new home by evening. The Vapi end has its own society rules and busy roads near the GIDC estate, so send us the new building's shifting hours when you book.
My company leased my flat. Who handles the handover?
Usually the company's admin team. Ask them for the handover date and whether they want an inventory of their own furniture, and we pack your things around what stays behind. If the company is paying for your move, the GST invoice and the inventory of your goods can be billed to it.
Is the monsoon a problem for a move in Daman?
Inside Daman, rarely for more than a few hours. The heavy spells come off the sea in July and August, and roads near the river and the estates can take water, so we wait them out and pack everything with a plastic layer. A load going to Mumbai in that season is given a little more time for the highway.
