Vapi is an industrial town on the Mumbai Ahmedabad highway, at the southern end of Gujarat. Its GIDC is one of the state's biggest chemical estates, with pharma, dye, paper and plastics units, and the town grew around it in four and five storey apartment blocks, rows of rented rooms for workers and, more recently, a few taller towers.
Housing is mostly flats: in Chala and along the road towards Daman, around Gunjan and the GIDC, and in the older part of town near the station. Plenty of people who work in Vapi live across the boundary in Daman or Silvassa, which are part of a separate union territory, so a move between them is short but leaves Gujarat.
People come here on postings to the estate: chemists, plant engineers, maintenance staff and managers, many with small households and a company flat waiting. They leave as often as they arrive, for Ankleshwar, Dahej and the other estates, or for Mumbai, a few hours south. A move in Vapi is usually small, quick and tied to a joining date.

The GIDC is built for trucks, and most newer societies can take a 14 or 17 ft vehicle inside the gate. Around the station and the market the roads narrow and fill with parked two-wheelers, so the truck finds what space it can and a smaller vehicle ferries the goods to it. The highway service roads are the natural place to wait, but they are busy, so the truck stands only for the loading.

Traffic in Vapi follows the estate. Shift changes bring a rush of buses, bikes and trucks on the GIDC roads and at the highway junctions, and the town roads are busiest in the evening. The highway itself carries heavy trucks at every hour, and a load headed for Mumbai is timed to reach the city when goods vehicles are allowed in. The quiet hours between shifts are the best time for a local move.

Weather and the months to plan around
Vapi is in Valsad district, which gets some of the heaviest rain in Gujarat. From late June to September the rain is heavy and steady, low roads near the Damanganga flood in the worst spells, and we put a plastic sheet beneath the outer wrapping on every item. Months of damp air afterwards are hard on wood and upholstery. Summers are warm without the dry heat of inland Gujarat, and November to March is the most comfortable time.
